I need a little more power

I know yu guys said to keep it stock, but I need a little more power out of the 87' 22RE. I was thinking of exhaust/headers and intake it is currently at stage zero. I would like to get the best brand that I can. I looked at Downey but I don't think they make them anymore. You guys have any ideas?

Go with LC Engineerings headers and a 2 1/4" exhaust with hi flow cat and muffler. Usually good for about 10 horses right there.

You gotta get the air from somewhere. If you do the exhaust, you should do the intake.

I would go with a short ram air unless you are in water a lot, they are a ***** when the filter gets soaked

Who makes an after market performance intake for a 22RE?

LC Engineering sells ported "performance" intakes. My suggestion for intake would be to go with a late model upper plenum and throttle body. The design is less restrictive due to the EGR tube being tucked away better plus you lose that early model IACV in favor for the bi metallic late model type.

I took a look at another 87' that had a Downey intake, exhaust, and headers on it. That company went out of business I believe. The intake looked very clean and well made, almost stock. The guy who owned it said that it gave him a little extra power. I am not looking for a speed demon, I think most of us gave that up when we purchased these trucks, but I would like to be able to go 65 up most hills on the highway. At the same time I would like to keep it looking as nice as possible and not add one of those metallic generic intakes. If anyone has one here I am sure they work great, just not my style.

Yes Downy is done, sadly. Also to the best of my knowledge it doesn't get much better than a K&N drop in for us. FWIW it seems you can do a lot to a 22re and you still aren't getting much of anything in return (power wise). Mine is bored out with a big cam, header and full exhaust. Still pretty slow though. I'd say go with a cam and exhaust; maybe re-gear if you have bigger tires. Mine is on 33s with stock gears and will hold 65 up hill.....in 4th of course.

are you talking about a K&N drop in filter or the whole intake?
would you recommend the headers as well as the cat back?

I am talking about the drop in only. Don't know of a replacement unit/box. You should be alright with 31"s. I would do the header (high flow cat depending on local emissions laws) and continue out the back. IMO flowmasters don't sound to hot on these trucks, i hate mine. Good luck with whatever path you go down.

toyota needed power

LC Engineering sells a complete filter kit that replaces the stock restricted air box. Also a cam upgrade without a doubt helps. makes sur you degree the cam. If u can get the head shaved a bit to raise compression helps. I have a 93 5 speed 22re with ported polished head and intake, big bore throttle body, 1.5 inch header. head shaved .065 and block decked .05, cam has been degree and the rods lighted and everything balanced. cost alot but with 32s i can pull any hill in 5th and gain speed
