I called several salvage yards and 90% of thedon't see any 8.2's. The other 10% are charging at least $3,000 for them.
Also car-part.com are full of lies haha. I called those shops and their costs are at least $500 more than what it says.
The primary cause for 8.0” differential catastrophic failure is mainly due to excess age gear deflection under high load conditions.
The overall construction of the 8.0” diff is inherently weak. It’s a small diameter pinion gear, smaller diameter pinion bearings, small diameter ring gear and thin 3rd member housing casting.
All of these items come into play when it leads to a differential failure.
The only way to improve a stock 8.0” is by increasing pinion bearing pre-load and the carrier bearing preload. But that doesn’t quite fix the issue enough to be considered significantly stronger.
The 8.2” rear diff is Toyotas updated rear diff that supersedes the 8.0” deficiencies.
It uses a larger diameter pinion gear, larger pinion bearings, larger donated ring gear, beefier carrier, bigger carrier bearings and the 3rd ember housing is of thicker construction which all plug together yields a stronger differential.
There is no significant way to increase the 8.0” rear diff without swapping out to a completely different differential.
