I need help understanding what wheel will work

Alright, here's my problem -- I've had my heart set on getting a set of 20" Foose Speedster 6's wrapped in BF Goodrich All-Terrains (size 285/55R20). So I went down to talk to a local distributor and he says it shouldn't be a problem. Then it turns out that because of the backspacing on the rim, the wheel and tire combo won't fit without a wheel spacer, which by the way sounds pretty scary. I really want to put these 2 together, but he's saying (1) you can have the rim and tire together, but you need a spacer; or (2) you can have the rim and get a low pro tire and forget about the spacer.

So is there any way to know for certain which tire and rim you can put on your car without actually having to put them on. 'Cause I'm actually thinking aboug just buying them just to see if they'll fit or not. Please advise!

I believe this guy went with a 3" Cornfed Spacer lift (www.burtmanindustries.com) giving him enough room to work with 20" Foose rims and BFG AT KO tires. Can anyone back me up or correct me? (Preferably the badass who owns this 4Runner)

The reason why I say that is because that is actually my truck. I did decide to go with a 3" lift from Revtek and slapped on a set of 20" Foose's wrapped in BFG 285/55R20 All-Terrains. With this setup, there is just enough space behind the rim to clear to upper arm, although I did have to cut away a lot of the fender.

HELL YES!!! First of all....I love your Runner. I was searching the internet for a perfect wheel/tire setup, decided on the Foose and BFG combo.....and then I happened upon your pic. Talk about completely random.

Couple questions....

Will a Cornfed 3"/2" lift provide enough room for that setup?
~ I am worried about keeping my full turning radius...I work at a construction site (New Home Sales) and I don't do much off-roading. Moderate at best.

How do your BFG AT's hold up?
~ I have a highway commute to and from work...so I need a good life/wear pattern.

Brakes?
~ Did you have to upgrade your brakes to compensate for those 20" rims? Would you recommend it?

275?
If the 285's rub too much, Will the 275/45/20 BFG work with those rims?

Can you please send specs on the rims.....backspacing?

I haven't taken any more pictures mainly because I haven't been anywhere interesting and the truck has been under some serious surgery (most of the interior panels have been removed and I have been driving without my climate controls for a little over a month now).

But to answer your questions:

1. The Cornfed lift should work, since the Revtek lift I am using is also rated as a 3/2 lift, according to their website. As for turning radius, you should not have a problem, so long as you are willing to trim off a lot of your inner plastic fender. From I have been able to tell, I still have my full stock turning radius without rubbing up against any other body parts.

2. I drive about 25 miles roundtrip everyday for work, with a mixture of both local and highway. I have only had the wheels on for a couple of months and have not noticed any significant wear and tear. They look like they are holding up real well and I do not think I have lost any ride quality (that is by my standards). Also, they do not make as much noise on the highway as mud-terrains. Plus, BFG's are known to last forever. I remember I had a set of low-profiles on my old rice rocket, and they almost never seemed to wear out even after all the burn outs and drifts I pulled.

3. I have not upgraded the brakes, although that is always a good idea (and costly, as well). I have noticed that the truck is a lot heavier and so I have had to compensate with more time to apply my brakes comfortably. But again, it is nothing significant.

4. Honestly, I do not think my 285's rub that much at all, if any. So I would say go with the 285's -- they fill the wheel well a lot better and just look meatier (again, this is just my opinion).

5. As for specs about the rims, unfortunately all I know is that they are 20x9.5 Foose Speedsters. I can't recall what the backspacing is, but I believe they only have one size for their 20's. So if they fit on mine, you shouldn't have a problem fitting them on yours.

wheel spacers are not as scary as everyone makes them out to be as long as they are hub centric and you arent using anything outrageous when you dont need to.

Sorry for not getting back sooner guys. Work has been ridin' my @$$ like Zorro lately. Plus, my Runner's been in the shop for the past 3 months, so I haven't been lookin' at the boards lately.

Anyway, to answer your questions ...

Trik: I did not use a wheel spacer because I specifically did not want something wedged in between my rim and the hub -- just didn't feel right. I can see Casper's point in that they it's probably all in my head; but the fact that a friend of mine manufactures wheel spacers for trucks and suv's and even he won't use them, scares me a little.

I am still loving my tire and wheel combo. The suspension has started settling in a little more, so I have had to cut a little more of the fender and mudflap. But I love it still. Ride is good, turing radius is fine, noise is minimal -- really couldn't ask for more.

Lees: The wheel/tire combo set me back about about $3,500. A lot of paper routes and candy bars door-to-door went into that I know Foose makes a black Speedster sick with chrome lip in 20". Pretty amazing, if you ask me.

If you're never going off road than BFGs are a poor choice for dry and wet pavement as their resistance to hydroplaning is subpar compared to other all terrains and after about 35000 miles (or a few years) they tend to ride hard and they lose their dry grip along with it and I know cause I drove my GF's truck on three sets and I'll never buy them for my truck. Nittos are better in everyway on the street and quite comparable off road but with those rims I doubt you'll be seeing dirt.

Nice looking rims but the BFGs are overrated.

I ended up going with the american racing black rt-s wheel and some procomp xtreme at's, they are a beaut and I will leave pics next saturday because I am taking her to a great site on friday.
