I need new headlight recommendations

I was going to go with TEQ and read some reviews of the same water moisture issues as those cheap ebay headlights. So, I ordered the cheap ebay headlights, and just going to take them apart and seal them my self. Besides, buying headlights that cost about 10% of the value of my 4runner seems kind of ridiculous to me.

The sport edition 4Runner headlights are slightly darker than the SR5 and Limited chrome headlights.

If that doesn't float your boat, you can order OEM or TYC headlights, open them up, and paint the housing black. Have seen others on this forum do that.

Stay far away from TEQ.

I had an order with them that was over a month late when it did eventually turn up. Zero communication from them during that time, and I got maybe one response for every 3 or 4 attempts to contact them via facebook/email/phone.

Once the order finally arrived, the headlights were a mess of sealant, one projector had been mounted crooked so the beam pattern was visibly tilted, and even maxing out the adjusters had the lights aimed too low to actually be safe to drive with.

I sent them back, and when I received them the second time a week+ later, both projectors were crooked and I still couldn't actually get both headlights aimed high enough to get close to the correct position.

At that point I sent them back again and had to initiate a chargeback with my bank to finally get a refund.



I went for cheapie black aftermarket headlights with an extra bead of sealant and they've survived probably 18 months of texas heat, beach driving, and are holding up fairly well. A little damage to the clear coat but otherwise fully functional and I haven't exactly done much to protect them or prevent that.

If you really want to buy a prebuilt retrofit, these are fairly new but have better reviews than TEQ. They also occasionally do holidays sales which cut the price a bit. 4G 4Runner | Freedom Outfitters

Forgot to mention, I sprayed clear coat on my cheapie headlights, hoping it will help in the desert heat. What brand did you go with?
 
Same problem here with aftermarket. They got moisture in their and it really sucks. I tried to fix it once but obviously didnt fix it. I am about to try again tomorrow.

At this point I'd go with OEM and suck it up. It's like $600 for the pair with shipping right now. If this next fix attempt doesn't go well I'm sucking it up and buying them myself.

The extra silicone bead around the lens/housing seam seems to have worked perfectly, I think if I eventually replace this set I'll take the couple extra minutes to add a layer of PPF to the lens and that should have even the crap headlights holding up for years.

As it is, the issues are only cosmetic despite all the saltwater & car washes they've been through.
 
I've never been a fan of aftermarket headlights, so I snagged a used set of OEM lights and blacked out the housings and did a true HID conversion.

Since I used bi-xenon projectors, my high-beams are ultra bright, it's insane. But even the low beams, properly aimed, are incredible.

I know they're not perfect, but I love them.

I suggest you only use new oem assemblies, which can be had for 450 out the door, then have them retrofited with hid projectors.

the g5-brt and morimoto d2s 5.0 are good projectors,

have a professional do the work, only person I trust is lightwerkz.net ,

its a premium, but they are the best, several members here have let them done thier lights,
also with d2s projectors, you can use oem d2s bulbs like osram and philips. a quality hid ballast is also needed, hyluxtek is a good aftermarket brand.
 
I got TEQ headlights, from appearance perspective they are 10/10. I do have a probelm with the left halo slightly crooked, still trying to figure out how to get it aligned. Other than that, long lead time but they look awesome. I just added some extra water-resistant silicone to help seal them.

How do you open the housings?

...Just cut into the sealant and pull or heat them up somehow?


I'd be interested in doing this to my existing headlights after I restore them.

Most people warm them up in the oven and then pull them apart. You can find how-to's on youtube.

It's garage kept, and it's been bone dry here.

I read the comments about the moisture build up, after I bought them of course, I just decided to roll with it. I kept the OEM incase I get frustrated.

Thanks I will check on there.

So the moisture buildup is from failed seals?
Is there a preferred sealant?

And could you just put in a weep hole at the bottom so moisture can drain out? Or is the moisture bad for the bulbs so it needs to be a totally dry environment?
