I Need New Shoes

Here what I have found.....

BFG AT , 16/32 tread depth , 47lbs , 31.8" "C" rated.

GYSA , 14/32 tread depth, 44lbs , 31.7" , "P" rated.

GYSA , 16/32 tread depth , 48lbs , 31.7 , "C" rated.

Revos , 13/32 tread depth , 43lbs , 31.7" "P" rated.


I just called GY store , 190.95 each for GYSA "P" rated , mount , balance , lifetime rotation and balance , out the door $823.oo + tax.

My Revos have went from 13/32 to 6/32 in 37,000 miles with rotate at every 5,000 miles and usually around 36-40 psi. Don't know if thats good wear or bad wear or normal ,but it's visually looks beyond my comfort zone for off road snow wheeling , even though I have not got stuck...YET!
They still ride and handle well in rain . snow id getting slippery driving though.

My '99 Ltd needs them too. Have flops. ughh.

Having searched, read and searched more I am still not clear what are my best choices. Not a lot of threads concerning snow performance as compared with off roading. I need good rain/snow traits and I tow.

Did the Revo's handle snow well or just okay. This is important since we get alot. Have 3' on the ground already.

I was thinking of BFG AT KO but now leaning on GYSA

Don't forget that you have to replace the spare too. Very bad mojo to be mixing tread patterns around if you get a flat. Tires handle differently and you want to do the best thing for your safety.

Although I am quite happy with my Revos, I would seriously consider Nokian Vatiiva A/T which I did not know of when purchasing my second set of Revos.

Dont rule out the Firestone Destinations A/T's. I had the chance to run them to VT and back to Boston on Thurs. The roads were snow covered for most of the trip, and the tires performed flawlessly, even at highway speeds (50+). Getting through the deep stuff is a piece of cake. Over 18k on this set and I still dont have a single complaint.

The Destinations were compared favorably to the Revos (which I almost purchased) by several reviewers on Tirerack. I gave them a shot due to the big difference in price. I had considered the other 2 initially, but ruled them out- the BFG's due to their compromised on-road ride and the GWSA's because of their reputation for lowering gas mileage. If you spend more time offroad than on, Im sure either of them would be great choices!

By the time I add shipping , mount and balance and disposal of old tire , I wouldn't save but very little if any money. Plus have nobody to go back to if I have an issue. I personally would never buy tires on aline and have a shop install them. If you have the slightest problem ( Vibration ) and the tire show its balanced or they can get it to balance , then I have to ship it back , blah , blah ............... all to save about $10 per tire ....no thanks .

I already have my spare upsized to 265/70/17 with a virgin Revo.

maine runner , I will probably go with BFG or GYSA , the GYSA I can get in a "P" rated which rides nicer and would get a little better fuel economy . I drive about 25k per year. As far as the Revos , if you battle a lot of snow I would avoid them, never have been impressed with them in snow from day one. Great ride , good gas milage , great in rain , not impressed with the wear . These are a decent tire but more of a good all season tire than an all terrain. All depends on what you want . Not a horrible tire by any means.

BFG AT comes in a "C" rated , the GYSA comes in "P" or "C" and "E" .

Thanks for the advice on ordering online. My local tire shop can order the GY and others. Do not like the idea of not having to ship back. Seems risky.

The truck is now a secondary vehicle and to tow my boat. Sad to say it is not used much. Still have not hit 90K and it's a 1999. The truck is 98% stock. I added rear driving lights to aid in night launchings at the boat ramp.

While I am sure everyone has an opinion, what is yours on the lettering, outlined or black?

Vatiiva AT's are going to perform similar to revos in all conditions with better snow traction.

Looks like youve already done the math, and I dont necessarily disagree. Prices for mount+balance and disposal will vary, but youre right- $40-60 is about all the difference would be on a set of 4. Probably not worth it. Ive had great luck with Tire Rack in the past, but try to buy local when it makes sense for the reasons you already mentioned.

Be aware that many places will price match, or at least negotiate, which works out best for everyone. The money you save on shipping will be more than what you pay in tax, so you may come out even farther ahead.

IMO on snow packed highways/side streets Nittos have better rearend control and turn in bite and are a bit more predictable than BFGs but both are solid tires for street and off road but I give the Nittos the nod to overall street performance and price and they now have a mileage warranty. I have had about 12 years of driving on BFGs with several Toyotas and the last three were on my Nittos.

If you don't really off road much then the Revos or GY are a much wiser choice for on-street performance and I'm sure will wear better.

I would like to try the Nitto TG , but right now I'm just trying to find someone around here who carries them . They are a nice looking tire and look like a good mix between BFG and a Revo . I might have a lead on a place here but will check after Xmas . I dont want to buy tires on line .
