I need rear info.

'99 T4R 2wd great shape mechanically except rear end whining not too loud...yet. What I need to know is some idea of price of a used one or how can I make this one last? I've heard "pack the rear end with grease and let it go until it can't go any more". Any idea where to get one in the N. Texas area? Any help would be greatly appreciated!:scared: Also are all 3rd gen's rear ends interchangeable? I should prolly go with the same year rearend.

If it's 4.10 you should find a used one for $100-$200. All 8" thirds are interchangeable, assuming the gearing is correct, you don't need the same year or even the same generation 4Runner.

The one exception is an elocker third - that won't bolt up, a little fab is needed to make it fit. Other than that, any third from an 8" axle from first gen to fourth gen (maybe fifth gen?) will work , assuming the gear ratio is correct.

you can use any non locking, non tacoma 8in.
since its 2wd you don't have to worry about matching the front gearing.
Used should be $100-$200

Thanks to both you and kidvermicious for the good info. You answered my next question about my current being 2wd and the next possibly being 4wd. No mods needed??? Any ideas where to find quality pre-owned parts? It's probably a roll of the dice as to the quality of a new diff. Any way to test it??
