i need rims for winter...help pls

i have a 2011 4runner limited with 20 inch rims...what can i do for winter rims? i live in Toronto Canada and they use salt on the roads in the winter.

Why do you think you need winter rims? I live in upstate NY where we have much heavier snowfall then Toronto and they salt more heavily as well. I've never had to put steel rims on just for the winter. You just need to wash down your vehicle more often, that's all.

What part of upstate? I am from Syracuse area, lived in Earlville, Morrisville, Oriskany Falls, Syracuse itself, Liverpool, Poolville, Watertown, and Lima. Dang, I wonder if I missed one.

Remember though most of upstate NY uses 100% salt on the roads, Toronto might use 10 to one sand to salt. I wonder if that wears on the finish faster?

I grew up in Syracuse, west near Solvay. Went away to school and then moved back and lived in a Syracuse suburb (Camillus) for several years. Afterwards was work transferred just about 65 miles South to Binghamton where we've been for 25 or so years. I swear they dump salt on the roads here when it's not even needed and then when the roadways, especially the interstates dry up, the pulverized salt comes through the vents and you can actually taste it in your mouth. Wouldn't surprise me if down the road it turns out to be a carcinogen or worse.

I too live in upstate NY, just NW of Schenectady, and I have a 2nd set of wheels/tires for winter use. It's not the road salt that I'm worried about, it's the snow/ice that they put the salt down for that worries me. IMHO, with 20" wheels, there aren't any suitable winter tires available in that size, and they don't have enough side wall to handle the rough roads and pot holes one encounters. I have a set of 16" alloys with Bridgestone REVO's for winter use, and couldn't be happier with them. In the spring, the regular wheels/summer tires go on for looks. In the winter I am more concerned about driving safely than looking 'good'.

Pretty much the same for me. Got a set of steel rims with Michelin X-ICe. Yes they will rust, but my last set on my old CRV got 12 years without any problem. Just put a plastic trim over them and forget about the rust.

This was my initial option, CAD$90 per rim at Toyota dealership. However, I was able to get SR5 wheel take-off which I will be using for for my winter tires.

BTW, I will be using Nokian Hakka R SUV. I will pick up from Buffalo, NY this coming weekend. US$878 (CAD$861) installed!!! compared to CAD$1200 here in Toronto Area.

I'm just 45 minutes from the US border and my family can use the savings for shopping.

4 X Blizzaks or Nokians is about as bulletproof as you can get in the winter. A side benefit not often mentioned is improved stopping.
