I need some info

I need some help. I own a 2004 Sport and I recently had to put it in the body shop. The last week that I was at my hunting club, I had an oak branch fall out of a tree and land on my 4Runner. I'm in Afghanistan right now so my wife is the one having to deal with everything while I'm gone. She picked the truck up the other day and noticed that the two rear side windows did not match eachother. I had the driver side rear window replaced. She told me that the lines in the window did not match because one window had the lines going horizontal and the other one had the lines going vertical. I told her that that wasn't the way that it was and that they needed to replace the one on the passenger side so that it would match the new one. She took it back to the body shop and was told that the window they ordered is for all 03-09 models and that's the way that it was suppose to look. I told her that I would handle it when I get back home but I wanted to see if you guys would take a look at your 4Runners to see if I'm wrong. If I am correct, I'm going to let them know they need to order the window for the right side of the truck so that it will match up with the new one. I'm sure that there isn't going to be any problem with this new one functioning the way that it should, but I want everything to match up since I'm the one paying for it. I would appreciate any help. The are the antenna array for the radio, and they are horizontal on one side and vertical on the other. It's called a diversity antenna. To put you at ease I checked mine the orientation of the arrays help give it as clear reception as possible

Yes..agree on the diversity antenna.

LoL! I didn't notice that one side is vertical and the other is horizontal..
I know that the antenna is embedded in the glass.
I can confirm about the "diversity antenna" as there are two ant plugs(big and small)..
Usually receivers have "dynamic control" and can choose which ant have the the strongest signal..supporting the claim that one is vertical and the other is horizontal.

Yeah, the next step would be to lay an antenna left to right on the vehicle, either in the rear glass or sun roof. This would have all 3 dimensions covered And then if the headunit could utilize all three at once, it would not matter which direction or at what speed (variances can occur due to vehicle speed, air tempurature, humidity) a wavelength intercepted the antennas at, it could triangulate to receive a near perfect transcription of the signal and eliminate any negative effects of the doppler effect so you could have to clearest possible signal at all times.

I guess that since the wavelengths are traveling at incredible speeds there may not be audible differences and the only advantage would be the near perfect transcription into the audio processor.

Sorry, I'm an engineer, the glass is never half full or half empty, it is simply twice as big as it needs to be and I need to fix that

I've seen a few 4th Gen 4Runners around here but I think they are the up-armored versions. So I wasn't sure if they still had the factory rear windows or not. Thanks again. I was thinking that was the antenna but the guy at the body shop told my wife that it was the defrost. So I was right about that part.

Yes, my Runner also has horizontal in one side, and vertical and looks like a "maze" on the other side. I didn't notice that..
Since those lines are antenna, there should be contact points. and I hope the installer was aware..because it could affect your radio reception.

I would like to connect the other antenna plug on my after market radio because AM reception is poor sometimes, tried connecting them in parralel, but there's more interference.. Is there an external circuitry that I can buy?? like a "switching/selector" type so that I can utilize both antenna plug? The OEM radio has the dynamic control/combining built in, but most aftermarket system have only one ant socket. Most of us don't bother about the AM reception as we prefer music players. I realize that radio/AM should be prioritized, because emergency broadcasts are aired in those frequencies.

Replacement installations in the rear glass should be verified if they have the antenna connectors

Actually I'm not really a stereo guy, so I'm not entirely sure how all of it is hooked up. I am aware of how aftermarket stereos are set up with the one plug for an antenna, but how it all comes together into a 4Runner factory stereo I don't know. Due to problems with interference, its not really something you could try to build since it would be difficult to shield a switcher of some type. You may just have to settle wit the one, sorry.

I searched crutchfield.com for you and found nothing, but that shouldn't stop you from trying to find something else. Find some stereo websites and just type in a search for diversity antenna and see what comes up

Share a picture of those armored T4Rs if you can - that would be something interesting to see.

I've been in the Air Force four a little over nine years now. I will definately get some pictures of those 4Runners when I get the chance. The bad thing is that I will not be able to save those pictures on our computers. I will be able to put some of those up when I get back home in a few months. And "thanks" for your comment. Oh but now that I think about it, if you do a search on here I believe that someone else put some pictures of the up-armored 4Runners on here a couple of years ago.
