I need transmission cooler help...

I have an 04 sport V6 model that I am going to be pulling a Uhaul trailer from California to Maine in a few weeks. I will be pulling a double axle U-haul 6x12 trailer that is rated up to 4500 pounds give or take. I am looking to install a tranny cooler for my truck and just checked out some parts at NAPA. should I get the ultra-cool
-Hydan 4819 rated for about 2500 pounds
or
-Hydan 4823 rated for 5000 pounds.

1) Does anyone have experience with either of these units?
2) Is $150 for installation a fair price from my local guy?
3) Is there a disadvantage to installing the larger unit?
4) Do I need to add more tranny fluid to compensate for the tubing/relocation of the fluid? if so what kind of tranny fluid?

Any other info is appreciated. It seems like a no brainer that if I'm towing more than 2500 pounds then the larger unit would be correct, but then again the 4runner is rated to tow 5000 pounds and doesn't even come with a tranny cooler in the first place. Thanks for any info guys.

I would go with the larger unit rated at 5000 lbs. The only possible disadvantage with the larger unit is that it will take longer for your transmission to reach normal operating temp during winter months. This could result in a longer delay before your transmission will shift into overdrive. You will need to add a little more tranny fluid to compensate for the minor increase in cooling capacity. Check your owner's manual for fluid type. Imo, $150 to install is excessive especially if it will be installed in front of the a/c condenser since that is right in front. If that price included the purchase of the cooler too, then it would be a fair price. It's simple enough that you could do it yourself and there are plenty of write ups here to help you.

FYI, I believe you have a small, built in trans cooler in the radiator like the 3rd gens. You can opt to bypass it, or connect the add on cooler in series.

i have a 04 sport v6 just like you so this should be pretty applicable-

i installed the Hayden 678, it was a bigger size that most people recommended but i figured id give it a try, because many a times when doing rock crawling in the desert my A/T temp light would come on so i knew i needed a cooler. i got this from amazon for like $58 and it was a super easy install, took about a hour tops. i also didnt need any extra tranny fluid, the level stayed basically the same. this on one of my best and cheapest mods, i have zero issues with my tranny getting up to temp and it performs great, i would suggest my model that i bought.

i tried looking up your model that you listed and i couldnt find any info on it when i googled it

:iagree:The only thing to "mess-up" is running the lines so that they rub on something sharp or kink. The link in my signature will take you to a great post that will add to WhiteChevelle's awesome advice.

oh yeah the other thing is to make sure the inlet and outlet are connected to the right spots on the cooler, i can always take pics if itll help you, in the case you decide to install yourself. the last thing i found helpful was to install the cooler in the middle of the radiator so you have some length for the hose to bow out them bend inside between the headlight and radiator so there are no sharp kinks :guitar2:
