i have a few options...one involves having no more 4runner...

1. Save a little money up and get an older civic for work and keep the 4runner (but then im paying insurance on 2 vehicles, and at my age, insurance is REALLY high, so i dont know if i can afford to have two)

2. Trade or sell the 4runner and get a civic, probably pocketing a couple grand...

3. you tell me...

I dont want to get rid of my t4r, BUT I drive 30 miles to work and 30 back in stop and go and i only drive streets to school and back...its KILLING me to only get 16 mpg...

If I ever got rid of my 4runner, I would get a new 3rd gen someday...

PLEASE help me figure this out!

You already know the right answer. Buy the Civic for now. After your finished with school, you can get yourself a 4Runner again.
 
Yeah, but I wanna find a way to keep my 4runner for weekends and recreation purposes...

:( I'm still thinking about it
 
If you do get a older civic, say one for less than $1,000, you wouldn't really need full coverage on it. I mean all you would really need is liability. No sense in paying it since the car was cheap. But, that is if you get an older civic really cheap. Just my 2 cents. Hopefully, you will find a way to keep both. Good luck, man.
 
Well yeah I'm sure I could find something, but I tried for a few months and didn't get anything good...and this job is perfect because its giving me office, sales, and teaching experience all in one job
PLUS theyre paying for me to get cpr and first aid training and EVERYONE knows who the red cross is so it will look good on a resume...and good hourly wage...but it still sucks paying gas money out the butt...
 
You already have the 4Runner and know the shape it's in. I can tell your in love with it...dont blame ya. If I were you , I would post a few signs around work, school, newspaper ect looking for someone thats going your way and carpool. Heck, if they dont have a car, haveing them pay for the gas , they are still coming out ahead since they dont have to pay a car note
 
i work for an insurance co.

contact your ins. co. they should have some sort of garage policy may not be able to drive it much but id rather store my t4r then sell it it

just giving an option

buy any foreign 4 cyl.
get liability, no point of insuring a 1000$ dollar vehicle for 10,000$
dont drive the t4r for your needed period of time till u acn save money

just an option

good luck man would hate to see any one sell there loved runner

You know your truck, its hard to find a clean ride these days.

You can always get a nice air intake/filter and a better flowing muffler... and then not press on the gas as much as you do now.. but that would probably only get you 18-19 city and 21-22 highway

while a civic is still way better


BUT HEY! its cheaper and sounds better too!

I have had a second car on and off for years. Sometimes, it is to save on gas, other times is because it is a second type of vehicle. I ran the numbers and it is hard to buy a second vehicle just to save money on gas. You run the numbers and you figure the difference in gas, even if you don't put in the cost of the second car or depreciation, just add the cost of insurance, repairs, mantianance, etc. you won't come out ahead.

Put it another way, our company gives us 48 cents a mile to drive our cars. I find you really can't drive a car for 48 cents, very little of that goes to gas. At $3 a gallon, if you get 16 MPG, it will cost you about 19 cents a mile to pay for gas. Sure it is a lot, but in the scheme of things, not the biggest cost of ownership.

Once, I had a 1970 Volvo and a 1980 Civic. It was around 1983 and someone hit my Volvo. I really like it and tried to buy another used one. After awhile, I found drivng one car wasn't that terrible. Sure I mssed the bigger car, but it sure did simplify life. Bottom line, it is nice to have a second car, just don't do it to save money.
 
Keep the runner and buy a crotch rocket. Get great MPG's and split lanes in stop and go traffic. Best of both worlds
 
cant do a bike...gotta take equipment with me for my job...

It's 3-4 (9-10$ a few times a week) gallons round trip every time i go to work and back cuz its not just thirty miles at 65 mph...its stop and go for part of it...and to school EVERY day is 10 miles each way but all streets...and i keep my foot out of the pedal now...still only get 17-18

I'm thinking maybe put the 4runner under my dads name to cut down insurance cost, and put liability only on my $1-2000 honda under my name with my own policy

wat do u guys think?
 
so i still dont know for sure what im going to do...im going to get through my training and start my traveling (they pay 48 cents per miles after im done training) and then see how much $ i have and what kinda cost im looking at...

by then im going to put the 4runner under my dads name so the insurance will be cheaper...

and put away what i get on my first paychecks...

and we will see
 
I have a 4Runner and a Civic. Love the combo. The Civic gets 40mpg on the highway--double the 4Runner. I commute 90 miles per day. Savings alone are $200 per month in gas. Not to mention the extra mileage being put on the 4Runner.

I think it's totally worth it. You can buy an older 92-95 Civic for around $1000 with less than 200k miles. It will last and last, if taken care of.

The other great side effect is that you learn to appreciate the 4Runner a lot more. You get too used to any single car you drive on a daily basis. Even when I had an S2000, I drove that thing daily for a few weeks at a time. When I got back into my beater, it was like going from a supercar to a Yugo. After a couple of days of driving the beater, it was so nice to get back into the S2000. I really started to appreciate everything about it. Same principle applies here. They will compliment each other nicely. I will always have a Honda car and a Toyota SUV/Truck in the garage.
 
thats what im thinking about doin...civic/4runner combo

i commute about 60-80 miles a day on days i work, and 20 on days i dont, so i need something like a civic...

I'm working on it!
