I ordered a T4R TRD Pro in Army Green- Talk me out of a Sequoia

Hi All,

I love this forum, so much great info and knowledge.

Am I crazy to be thinking about not getting my army green trd pro 4runner and getting a trd pro Sequoia?

Everything tells me the 4runner in army green will be best bet, perfect size, amazing color, nice new tech updates, etc. But a very small part of me says for $5k more or so, should I consider the Sequoia.

The space and cargo is a huge plus. My wife and I are large people and we have 2 dogs (no kids) so comfort wise this is an advantage.

Some of you may have seen my post asking if you guys would buy one if it were made in Japan and not here in the USA-its clearly for whatever reason better build quality in Japan. But that said, I have heard the Sequoia's are bulletproof as well.

I am keeping this rig (no kidding) for 10 years or more-this may be my last new nice rig that I buy so I want to make the right decision.

I would buy the TRD Pro version of each-in Army Green

T4R PROS
Japan build-Bulletproof-will last 200k miles maintained properly
Gas mileage is better
Price is $5k less

Sequoia PROS
Space and cargo area
Larger engine-smoother ride

Lastly, can anyone chime in on future resale value on both.
We all know the T4R TRD Pros hold their value very well and are sought after.

What does the group think about the Sequoia's future resale value?

One last point, we only drive about 10k miles per year, so the cost of gas vs each other is not a big delta and I have gas stations on every corner so I am not bothered by having to refuel more often.

Anyway, please give me your thoughts and I know this is all subjective and individual, but its great to hear some different points of view.

The 4runner isn't exactly small. Front seats are quite comfortable for road trips.

The main thing is towing. Will you need to tow more than 5k lbs in the next 10+ years with this vehicle?

i think it depends on what you plan to do. the 4runner will be much better off road if you plan to go or if your just doing some family hauling then go sequoia . Only issue is its underpowered compared to the sequoia.

have you thought of a used land cruiser or GX?

I'm excited to see the T4R in Army Green. Probably one of my favorite FJ colors.

Need to decide on what you will use the rig for. Just by reading your post, I'd say go Sequoia. Extra space and bigger engine and still get it in Army Green.

Even if you plan to use it for trips or camping, it still has more space. Do you plan to actually off road it? If not and your idea of extreme off roading is Ouray, CO trails, then still get the Sequoia.

That being said, I firmly believe the 2020 T4R PRO in army green will always be higher resale over the other pro models such as Tacoma, Tundra, and Sequoia. If you plan to keep it 10 plus yeas that shouldn't matter.

I owned a 2016 taco and 2017 T4R at the same time. The build quality is better in the 4Runner. Taco was sold after 2.5 years.

Either way they are both great rigs. Flip a coin.

If you plan on offroading a lot get a 4runner. If you plan on towing it's sequoia. Both are good vehicles but at different things.

I don't think any of your other arguments for the sequoia are all that merited. Worse MPG's, massive vehicle (think parking and around town general pains in the azzholes), and not very good off road. IMO it sounds like you don't need the sequoia at all.

I'm 6'5" and I fit great in a 4Runner. I also don't have kids, and just dogs and my 4Runner fits me great. (I've owned 3 4Runners). To me the only reason to need a Sequoia is if you need the V8 for towing or if you have a bunch of kids, just my 2 cents :madgrin:

I am 6'7" 252lbs, i do not have my drivers seat all the way back. I slide it forward about an inch? maybe a little more.

Tons of room inside for my family. (wife, dog, and myself....Baby will be soon)

Even after we have a baby, there is still tons of room inside for activities....like making more babies! or carrying stuff.

Sequoia's are cool if you wanna haul tons of dudes home from the gay bar (because you have marketed your side job as an Uber to be geared towards returning gay males home safely)...or if you are carrying socialist democrats to some protest against the rights of working class Americans.


Clearly the 4Runner is the correct choice if you are an American.

Just to piggy back on the others. 6'5 here too. Fit better in the runner then most full sized trucks. I would bet the seating position might even be worse in the sequoia considering it is for me in the tundra.

I hated the Tundra when i looked at them before buying my 19 4runner. The Tundra seems lacking in modern anything, it seems like a cheap dopey looking and feeling truck. I considered a Chinese made GMC sierra 1500 crew cab after the Tundra.

Then i said screw a huge pickup, I always wanted a 4Runner and I am going to get one.

How big a boy are ya?

Have you test driven each and feel no difference between the two? All the 4Rs hold their value well, I suspect the Sequoia isn't too different, but if you're planning on keeping it 10 years this only matters for insurance premiums/loss payout. If it's just 2 people and 2 dogs and you're not towing, I'm not sure you'll notice much difference in storage.

If you aren't dead set on the Army Green then don't get the TRD Pro version of the Sequoia. I don't think it is much different than the regular ones and you should save at least 5 grand which would then put it in the 4Runner TRD Pro price. I think with the brand new refresh the Sequoia might be worth considering. It will be harder to park and is wider so on smaller 4x4 trails it will get scratched.

If you really want a huge amount of space for your dogs I say Sequoia since you never know when you might have a kid.
If you dont need the off-road ability and aren't dead set on army green. Heck you can vinyl wrap anything nowadays.
I would get the V8, tech stuff wise unless it's autonomous it's nothing to rave about. Safety sense come on you should know how to drive unless you are just accident prone.

I don't know about this. It's one of the most reliable trucks on the planet, has a roll down rear window and it's absolutely humongous amount of space in the back with the seats folded down. It's just not particularly modern, so it just depends on the features you want. I'd probably just buy a used one though and save the money since their haven't been many updates but I could say the same about the 4runner.

They have different purposes. The 4Runner is meant to be a 4x4, it doesn't need to be heavily updated for that.

The Sequoia isn't an off road vehicle. It's a family hauler and it's over a decade behind the competition.

Not sure where you get $5k more for Sequoia from. I looked at one and it was well into the 60's. Close to 70's. Trd Sequoia is up there in price as well.
