I ran across something interesting...

I was changing the oil on a new truck today and found something interesting on the oil filter. A magnet.

Does anyone here use these. I've never heard any discussion or mention of anything like this. I'm going to continue to use it on the truck since it is there, but it looks kind of expensive. In theory it's brilliant.

Since it is something I have never seen discussed here, I thought I would see what your thoughts were. There are several companies that make them. I'll list a few more below. Some are internal Magnets.

I also heard if you put a tampon in a filter it won't soak the oil up bc it's too thick but will soak up other contaminants. I dunno, read it on the internet so it must be true.....

There are 2 types of magnets for the oil filter...internal & external. Here is a shot if the internal magnets...


The others that are external would just trap the sediment against the wall of the filter and would be disposed of when the filter is replaced. I think it is a good concept. Same principle as out differential plugs. Everytime I change the fluid there I have sediment on the magnet.

We use magnetic drain plugs on dirt bikes all the time, it's a good way to keep track of any shavings in the oil. Shows signs of wear on the internals. Not sure how much it would do on a Vehicle where the transmission Is separate though.

You have magnets in your oil pan, your axle differentials, your transfer case etc. Can't hurt!

They're not bad for a wear indicators, but there are probably more convenient places for such a device, i.e. oil drain plug (you pull it out anyway and don't get any dirtier trying to fish it out of a filter or something). I've had magnetic drain plugs on a few different engines. Finding something like the above photo is bad news bears. I've never had anything show up, and the one time I had metal in my oil it was an aluminum cam gear that grenaded due to a casting flaw (and didn't stick because aluminum isn't ferrous).
