That's an awesome deal, unless it's been submerged or something. It is strange that the price is so low given the mileage. I paid 3000 for my '91 with 295,000 km on it, base SR5.

thats what i tohught.
it hasnt been submerged....i guess i can take it have another mechanic take a look at it, just in case

are there any problems i need to know about for that genreration, other than the head gaskets (easy fix?)

thanks

Headgaskets seem to be the worst of the bunch. Hopefully they let you take it out for a drive to test out the 4WD operation. If it has that low of mileage I'm willing to bet it might still have stock gaskets. Obviously check all the power stuff. If you can, take one of those screwdrivers that you can swap bits in and out of. Take some some different bits with you (at least a couple phillips bits) and maybe a flat head.

You can pry off the back carpeting on the gate in 5 seconds (pop in clips) and unscrew the metal cover guarding the guts of the gate. Shine a light in there and check out the window arms, checking to see how rusty they are. Buggers are a pain in the rump and snap, putting you in my situation (I have a piece of wood holding up the side where the arm broke, yay for spring projects).

Also check out the door sticker. If it says G144 for the axle code, you have some factory gears that are worth some cash, ie: 4.88s.

not sure what you mean by factory gears? actually scratch that though ill search it.
also, if its running original gaskets, is it expensive to change?

That will help you out. G144 code is factory 4.88s, not the most common ratio but great if you want to go bigger tires down the road. As far as the gaskets, it could run a long time to 250,000 without needing a change, it could not. Depends on how the previous owner treated it. Make sure the cooling system is working very good and I think you can wrap the crossover pipe with some header wrap or something to keep the heat down (heat from the cross over seems to help blow gaskets).

It would probably be pricey to do if taken to a shop. I think it's an 800 dollar job if not more. The parts aren't too expensive (You can get a whole engine gasket kit from egnbuilder for $119 US which would cover the head gasket I presume, might want to email them and ask) but the labour is the kicker.

These should have electronic odometers (not cable run, at least by that year) So it would be very hard. Not to mention VERY VERY illegal.
