I Think It's Time for a Tune Up...

I just filled up and calculated my mileage and it was a whopping 11.8 MPG. Granted I am on 33s and didn't account for the 1 extra mile traveled for every 30 but that would have equated to 5 extra miles on the tank so not much different.
Now I drive this thing only city really if I take it to work which is only 1.2 miles away or so. Even in my Corolla I average 18-20 MPG because of the way my commute is and I am stopped so much with my vehicle on.

Besides plugs and wires is there anything else I should try to look into? I have spark plugs ready to go in I just need to do them. Pretty sure they're the original plugs and I have 222k miles

Plug, wires, clean maf, throttle body, oil change, new air filter, properly inflated tires, alignment, dragging brakes are all things that affect mileage.

The most effect of mileage is driving habits. Hard accelerating/braking, long idle time and speed. These things get best mileage at 65mph.

Oil is good. Air pressure is good. Air filter is good. Alignment isn't perfect since I haven't done it after my lift but I never drive over 40 with it really. Hard acceleration is a no and hard braking is very rare. Long idle times in drive throughs and no constant speed aids in it. And 17 years of probably no maintenance on plugs, wires, MAF and throttle body.

Your alignment after lift is WAY OFF! I would really think about that along with the other stuff you plan on doing.

Sounds like you mainly do city driving. I get 14mpg city.

+1 over here in Bowling Green, KY. 14.7 usually. I have a 6 mile round trip each day so my truck barely gets warmed up.
 
i have 33s and have the odometer corrected with an ultragauge. i get 12mpg consistently. i changed, air filter, plugs, wires, cleaned tb, cleaned maf, tires at 40 psi, changed fuel filter and i still get crappy mileage. i did a drive all freeway for 100 miles and i still only got 12.5. i see people getting 14 to 16 consistently and i long for that mileage lol i have 290k on the clock

That might not be too far off if you get a measly 18-20 MPG with a Corolla! Used to get 26-30 MPG's in our Corolla all the time so that's downright terrible! If you subtract a third off a 4Runner's average mileage of 17, that's probably about right. Tune up is always a good idea though to keep things running smooth.

I've tried every trick in the book I know to increase mileage on these vehicles but nothing has worked. It's very hard to increase their mileage beyond the factory numbers.
 
I don't know. If you only drive it 1.2 miles a trip who knows what a benchmark mpg is. You basically will be operating in open loop with low engine temp the whole time. The ECU is programmed to go super rich in open loop and low-temp is a recipe for bad efficiency.

But, if gains are to be had, after plugs and wires, clean MAF and throttle body, replace fuel and air filter, PCV valve, and front O2 sensor if not known to be under 80k.

If you want to go further, check compression and send your injectors off to Witchhunter for cleaning and testing. Maybe she just wants some love and attention after 17 years of gross neglect.

I've only had it for 3 months. I am in the process of fixing things up. I am not rich and I am $1,800 or so in so far (just haven't installed all I've gotten). It's a process as you all know.

I've got a 2 mile commute to work every day and am running 32" tires.

I've done the following to help improve MPG:

Cleaned MAF
Air Filter
Fuel Filter
Spark Plugs
Upstream O2 Sensor
PCV Valve
Seafoam

I get about 14 MPG, and I figure that's about as good as it is going to get with it never getting a chance to warm up.

Well that's another thing that probably hurts me too. I don't drive mine until the temp gauge moves. So it stays on for like 4 minutes without me even doing anything lol

anyone know if that K&N Air intake system gives better mpg? i know it says it gives like 6 more HP, any extra mpg increase?
