I think my rear end is going.

So going down the road with my foot on the gas it shounds no different. But when I take my foot off the gas and coast there is a wine coming from the rear end. This happens at any speed just as long as your not on the gas.

Maybe I'll jack it up this weekend and test it out with someone under it listing for it.

The truck only has 48k on it and hasn't been beat on.

Any Ideas of what it could be?

What you described is a classic sign of misengagement between the ring and pinion gears in the differential. Get it to a dealer ASAP. Should still be under the powertrain part of your warranty.

We got the extended warranty so all is good. After I jack it up and check it out I'll have to call the stealer. Thats not what I want to do but at least I wont have to pay for it.

Wow, you may have one of the first rear axle grenading in a 4runner/GX. There has been problem with Tacoma, overseas Prado, and (very few) FJC's rear axle with locker grenading. These issues were thought due to the weak ring gear in locker-equipped Toyota rear axle.

What trany is in this truck? 4 or 5 speed. Sure seems like a 5 speed to me, but the book says its a 4.

Should the trany down shift when I put my foot on the brake? I've seen talk about it but dont rember.

That's my point. Up to now, i have not heard of any rear axle on 4runner or GX failing. I have heard that if you put in a ARB rear locker, then your rear axle is stronger.

I think that your tranny is 4-speed.

Your tranny is smart...so, it could downshift when you put on the brakes, esp. if you're on an incline (going downhill).
