What do you want it for?
I have a Glock 22 and Glock 23 in .40. I love them both.
I have a S&W M&P in .40. Love that too.
I have a Sig P226 in .40. Love that too.
Best thing I can say is to go out, rent your top three in what you're looking at, and shoot all of them.
Biggest thing though will be your price range and what you're going to use it for.

Love my Glock 27. .40 cal in a little package. Get the mag extender so your pinkie has a place to rest though....

Personal protection as in open carry or concealed carry?
I really liked the Glock 23 but found at the range that my hand felt way more beat up afterwards from shooting compact guns all day.
If it's just for the house and camping I would definitely get a full size gun. Do you by chance happen to be LEO/Military/EMT? I used my military ID to get the glock 23 for $330 brand new with 3 mags through a program they offer. Something to think about.
I realized that I seem like a Glock fiend but I've just had really good experiences with them.
Also, for home protection and then plinking while camping, look at getting a 1911 in .45. .45 is a proven protection round and you can buy .22LR conversion kits to go shoot all damn day for just a few bucks.

I put 10k or so rounds through an XD .40 subcompact. Never a single jam, no joking. One of the best weapons I have ever owned. A buddy of mine has it now and has put a few thousand through and says its still doing fine.

I just picked up this beretta nano 9mm for $400. I love glocks and this has that glock look and I plan on carrying it.

I just bought a S&W M&P 9mm for concealed carry. I don't have a great deal of experience with hand guns but I love it. It's very slim and I can carry it easily inside the waist band. It shoots great too, but the only thing I have to compare it to is a 357 python. Not quite the same.

Completely agree. I carry my XD .40 SC and would gladly trust my life to it. However if you aren't planing to carry, I would get a full size M&P .40. As soon as it is back in stock on the website I buy my guns from, I will have one as my new nightstand gun.
You can't go wrong between Glock, Springfield XD (or XDm), and S&W M&P. Go to a range where you can rent all 3 and buy whichever you are the most comfortable with.
If you have a little more $ to work with, look at Sig 229. But for $500 or less, the 3 I listed above are the best bang for your buck.

Either of the guns you mention will serve you well. I recommend trying to put some range time in with both to see which you prefer. I have owned both and I prefer my G19 but would not feel out gunned in the least with an M&P.
More important than choice of blaster is your use of it. I always recommend professional training and lots of practice. I have run over 26,000 rounds through my everyday carry G19 in the last 2 years going through classes and practice.

I bought it in Arizona at a gun store there. I'm not sure if it's a special Glock program by itself or a special Glock program through this store.
