I want ALL my doors to unlock when I put in "P"

First of all, my remote works like a charm. What I want is for all my doors to unlock when I put car in "P" and to lock when I get moving around 15-20 mph. I have searched the web, my owners manual, here and I can't seem to find how to program my 2002. What irritates me is I get home, come back outside to put something in passenger seat and the door is locked. If my memory worked like it should I would remember to hit the unlock button before I exited but I forget. IS there some way to program my door locks? Remote works like a charm as it is.

they lock when the doors are closed and you turn the key to start and open when you turn the key off. i never heard of that which you are trying to do, and i had a 2002 and currently an 01. that sounds like something you need to rig to make it do that.

I don't think you can "program" this may have to get creative and get some relay's and some limit switches added to the gear selector.

Hm, I wonder if Toyota changed the way that feature functions in the later models.
In my '97, all of my doors unlock when I turn the key off.

My 2000 doesn't lock or unlock any of the doors. Lol. I've been wondering about this.

Get a quality aftermarket alarm and it's programmable either way.

Interesting topic. My 99 does nothing when turned off/on. I manually hit lock all doors as I leave the house (if I remember) and then usually pull the drivers tab up after turning car off. I too wish A) all doors locked when I put car in drive, and B) at least driver's door unlocked when it turns off. Wondered if there was a way to go about doing this.

I would do this mod too, if someone figured it out. My Honda Odyssey unlocks this way and I've noticed the 4runner is less convenient.

If you drive through stop and go traffic in bad areas or just worry about your kids finding a new stupid way to fall out of the car or open a door while driving, auto lock is handy. But more so with decent auto unlock.

I have a 2000 Tundra with the VIP RS3000 System. I followed the instructions on page 20 of the manual and it worked just fine! I even started the engine and the doors did not lock. Working just fine. If you can't find you manual, here is the procedure:
1) Sit in the driver's seat with the driver door open. 2) Insert the key in the ignition switch, and turn it to "ON" (not ACC) 5 times (ON-LOCK-ON-LOCK-ON-LOCK-ON-LOCK-ON) within a 10 second period. The STATUS MONITOR'S LED turns on, and the piezo "Chirper" sounds once.
YOU MUST PERFORM THE NEXT STEPS WITHIN 30 SECONDS!
3) Select the operating mode:

MODE
Auto lock/unlock ON
Programming step: Close the driver's door
Programming Completion:Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" position (the chirper sounds once and exterior lights flash once)

Auto lock/unlock OFF
Programming step: Close the driver's door, then open, and close it one more time.
Programming Completion: Turn the ignition switch to the "LOCK" position (the chirper sounds twice and exterior lights flash twice)

Is the VIP RS3000 system factory or aftermarket? I have 99 ltd and it does nothing but also have a 00 SR5 that unlocks with key off but doesn't lock automatically ever. I have wondered time to time if there is some kind of programing to it.

gebomartin, I see what your goal is here, and its definitely a sweet idea. My mother had a Volkswagen Passat when I was growing up and I remember that her car would do that; unlock in park and lock when getting up to 10-12 MPH. I'm not necessarily qualified to speak on the electronics of a Toyota 4Runner, but I'd like to think that its safe to assume that it more than likely cannot be done. Much like with what [MENTION=96863]01thunder[/MENTION] had previously stated, I too, have a 2001, and the doors do in fact lock when starting the 4Runner and unlock when turning off.

So it sounds like this is possible, depending on the year and trim of the 4runner.
I wonder if this is more of an issue with the door lock actuators, rather than a computer/programming issue. Seems really weird to me that an early model ('97) base would have a 'luxury' feature like auto door locks when a later model wouldn't.
I know the actuator across the model years were iffy depending on age and heat. Wouldn't work at all when hot, but started to work when cooled down with the AC after a few minutes. Maybe another issue related to that?

?? Mine ('97) has no such unlock/lock behavior.

When I put my key in the driver's door and turn it once, I unlock that door, turn it twice in quick succession to unlock all doors.

Using the key in the passenger door simply locks/unlocks all doors.

I don't have a fob. Locks do nothing whether the truck is in drive or park or whatever.

The only automatic lock behavior is if the truck is running and I open my driver's door, I think all doors unlock at that point. Toyota doesn't want you to lock your keys in the vehicle.

That I am not entirely sure of. But, my good friends [MENTION=109102]MattJakobs[/MENTION] & [MENTION=150041]t4r_rio[/MENTION] both have 2001's and have the same issue as you do. So again, I'm just not sure.

I was in a base model (manual windows, mirrors, locks) '05 F150 for work a few years ago. I had opened the passenger door for something earlier and neglected to reach over and lock it again.
I went to pick up a coworker from a mechanic because he had dropped his work van off there. The mechanic was not in the best area of town.
I was waiting at the red light near the mechanic, when a big white bald guy in sunglasses opened the passenger door and just got in. I flipped a shit and went for my knife when I realized it was just my coworker. (not actually a skinhead; just the misfortune of being bald). A lot of F-bombs were dropped and of course he thought the whole thing was hilarious.

And that's why you lock your doors. I especially check the locks when at stop lights with panhandlers.
