I want ALL my doors to unlock when I put in "P"

I have a 3rd and 4th gen. My 97 door locks and unlocks when I turn on/off the ignition. I'm not sure because it's a limited or it's programmable. I programmed my 03 4R to have the doors lock/unlock when I shift in/out of Park.

I believe that this feature is only available on models with the VIP RS3000 security system installed from that factory. I also believe that you could have this added on at the dealership, so it could be available in a mix of models and years depending on the options selected when bought new at a dealership. That's my guess.

strangest thing - it would cause the doors to unlock when making a left turn, the way it was positioned caused wire to be activated during the turn. Drove me nuts until I figured that was the gremlin - thought 4R was posessed

My 2000 doesn't lock or unlock any of the doors. Lol. I've been wondering about this.

Yep. Me too. I had a 97 limited, and the doors locked and unlocked. Had a factory system in it.

My 2000 limited doesn't lock or unlock. However if I lock it with the fob, then unlock it with the fob, if I don't open a door in like 1 minute it will re lock automatically.

I have the RS3000 in my 97 and just followed the procedure Riceye posted and finally no more auto locking. Soon I will have my 4runner trained to only follow my commands and not to do any stupid things on its own

?? Mine ('97) has no such unlock/lock behavior.

Either you don't have the RS3k, or it's been disabled.
Do you have the "Security" light on your center console or dash? Do you have a module under your driver seat?
If yes, you should be able to follow the instructions posted above to enable the lock/unlock feature.
If no, your rig is not equipped with the RS3k that enables this function.

Yeah... no fob, no security system (or evidence of one) of any kind in mine.
