I want another/second 4Runner...am I nuts???

So my good old '91 Acura Integra is finally seeing it's last months so to speak. It's been having its share of age related problems and I really don't want to pour any more money into repairing the dang thing (just replaced the starter, spark module, and master cylinder several months back). Now it sometimes beeps constantly (like the seatbelt warning) as you drive intermittently and a few of the electronics and tranny are going skitzoid. Luckily a buddy of mine is willing to take it off my hands.

Now my question to you my fellow t4r owners - am I crazy to consider another 4Runner? I already have an '05 SR5 but my wife loves it. It suits *her* needs as she was the one who wanted the third row. It works perfectly since it trucks her and my thirteen year-old plus all their gear around to their tournaments and trips everywhere. So I figure I would make the ultimate husband sacrifice and... give her the 4Runner entirely *bow my head in sadness and shame*...

...and replace my old sedan with a brand spanking new '07 4Runner SE in fantastic Galactic. Everyone I've talked to thinks I'm just f'n nuts and tell me just buy a small equivalent sedan. I'm sorry, but I cannot go back to driving a car, the 4Runner just did it in for me. Neither can my other two year-old daughter which I have with me most of the time I drive. She simply demands it. Financially, it's totally do-able. I figure if I'm going to spend the money I might as well buy something I know I really want and like for the long term. Practical? By any means hell no. Fueled by passion, selfishness, and stubbornness? Absofreakinlutely. What do you guys think? Am I nuts to even think of having two runners in my garage?

Nuts? Of course not.

Passionate and recognizing a great vehicle from which you get great value? Of course.

I'd be jealous if you got two. If I were you, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

I have 2 4runners, a 1999 and a 2004

i dont think i want 2 4runners of the same gen tho ..... kinda wierd, trade in 2007 4runner and a bmw 535xi

a sport car for summer and suv for winter

I might own two different gens;make my '99 a weekend warrior and have an '07 as a DD.

Actually my plan is to keep my '99 for winter and off road fun and buy another AWD sporty car (WRX?) for the summer and long road trips.
Two SUVs that are too much alike and serve the same purpose is kinda silly since "why?" Gassing up two gas guzzlers would get old fast.

Funny you should mention that, nyc. I was considering a BMW but I just can't drive that low to the ground anymore. It just doesn't feel right anymore. I'm also driving my daughter around too so a nice bimmer and a two year-old is like oil and water. I need room for all her stuff. I also haul computer equipment regularly and other gear. I don't mind so much the ever frequent sprinkle of Cheerios and crackers crumbs in a 4runner either, as opposed to having a real nice sports car with leather laced with french fries in the back seat. Ah the sacrifices of parenthood.

Plus I've had hoodscoop envy since day one. :p

Since you already have a 4runner I'd pickup the new tundra with the 5.7 V8. I had to give up my 05 4runner to the wife and I ended getting a new Subaru wrx. Fun car! If I had extra $$$ to blow I would of just got the tundra.

Why Not

Well, my wife and I have been seriously thinikng of buying a Mazda Miata for summertime fun, especially now that the new power hardtop mades it's debut.

We got blasted by a major snowstorm in Ohio yesterday and today. My 4Runner performed like a champ. I sometimes feel nothing will stop it. After a long winter day like this one - in which I was stuck in the Cleveland airport all day only to have my fight cancelled - I think another 4Runner is a great and very practical idea!

As much as I like my 4th gen model for it's size and balance of on- and off-road performnce, I think a nice 3rd gen model would be nice to play with as well.

Go for it.

Get a Tacoma.

......Nut? Of course not....but why not considering an 07 TUNDRA.....Jummy.

The Taco is also one of my possible candidates. I love its clearance and stance but have yet to test drive one. If this is the case, I am looking at the double cab PreRunner TRD (gotta have the hoodscoop). The Tundra does look yummy but I think its sheer size would be impractical for me (yeah, I should talk, like having 2 runners isn't).

Still, the 2 main reasons for the SE are the XREAS suspension and hoodscoop (it's all about the hoodscoop). :p

I really do appreciate all the input and varied responses. It gives me more to consider, especially some options that would never have occurred to me. Thanks fellas.

Have you considered an early Gen 1 4runner 85-89? they are convertable where the back top comes off, kids would love it.

I got an 87 & 00 4runner as my login username says, Gen 1 and a GEN 3 and I love both of them, also throw in my 98 4X4 3.4 SC. Taco and all I need is a full size Tundra :bigok:

Just get a used 4runner to bash and not worry about another car loan/lease, one less auto payment and full insurance coverage to worry about...... only your/ HER 05 4runner.

I don't think it's crazy to own two 4th gens. It's a great vehicle! The only reason I'd hesitate would be the gas mileage. It doesn't get great mileage, but if that's not a big deal for you, then don't worry about it.

The Taco really is bigger than the 4Runner - it's about a foot longer. And the Tundra is bigger than that. My second car is a Taco; that's a good ride, too, but not as plush as the 4Runner Limited.

My parents have 2 runner, a 2003 limited and 1996 sr5. I drive the '96 (I'm 17). the SR5 has 224,000 miles and still runs like a dream. I personally want a newer 4gen SE, so i am working on getting one. I don't think i would even consider a different car unless it was a for purpose car. To me having more then one of the same car is a great idea. 2 is better then 1.

Go for it. The Taco is awesome. I have a '05 PreRunner DC TRD Off-Road, or if you can, get the '07 Tundra. :)

I understand your situation completely. We ended up with a 2005 MDX to compliment my 2004 4Runner, but almost went with another T4R.

Go for it and mod the hell out of yours! :biggrin2:

We're in the same boat. My wife and I LOVE the 4Runner but mainly drive it only on weekends and evenings (I have a company vehicle for work [Explorer, bleh] and she drives an Accord to work).

The Accord is a '97 though and is starting to act & feel old (needs a CV currently) and we'll be replacing it this summer. I cannot decide on a single car out there that I really like, so I'm down to considering either a Highlander or another 4Runner. I really felt weird about even considering another Runner though so thanks for helping me justify it! :D

Went to a local Toyo dealer at lunch today. They had a Taco single cab PreRunner TRD and a shadow mica 4R SE. I think the trip had more of a negative affect on my decision making since seeing both and being in both threw me for a loop. I love the higher stance of the taco, but part of me still has it for the 4R. Unfortunately, I didn't have time for a test drive. I really wanted to experience the XREAS system first hand though. Although, the taco looks like a 'fun as hell' rig to drive. The taco is indeed longer too. I'm gonna have to factor that into the equation as my current 4R SR5 already barely fits in my garage. I guess I can always move the washer and dryer into the front yard. To complicate things even further, seeing shadow mica in person was like "woah - that is niiiice". Now it's "Shadow or Galactic?" Dang, I thought I had this all figured out.

dude, get another 4runner... like twins, only different.

or get the gx470... the trendy sister that doesn't like to hike but wants to go to the mall instead.

or get a FJ crusier... the less made up sister that likes to moutain climb and drinks beer.

or get a Highlander and be a soccer mom.

If getting the first 4 runner proved to be a good idea then your 2nd is a given so long as your needs have not changed. If same needs, then the real question is do you want to risk dissapointment trying another vehicle when the T4R is a proven article? Plus when you sell one down the road you will have another to swap your upgrades to.
