Search for Retrofit on this site.

Look at The Retrofit Source for supplies.

Look the stuff over and narrow down the direction you want to go it, then ask some more questions. As of now, there is way too many opinions that will be thrown out because every single option is still available.

just as an FYI... HID bulbs into a Halogen housing is illegal. And there are absolutely no benefits with this set-up.

The HID bulb's burn spot is not in the same location as the Halogens in which the housing was designed for. It light hits the reflector and is scattered/thrown everywhere you don't want it. So the HID into a Halogen housing is going to be a waste, unless you do a complete Retrofit with Projectors designed for HIDs.

For a halogen set-up, I would look into this:
Fog: Philips Xtreme Power 9006 XTP 55W (HB4)
Low Beam: Philips Xtreme Power 9006 XTP 55W (HB4)
High Beam: Philips HIR1 (9011)

Yes its illegal, and no you do not need to do an entire retrofit kit with projectors but it will get the most out of the new mod. I had previously upgraded to an HID kit before I did the updated headlights and it was a DRASTIC improvement! I would do it again in a heartbeat. You can get a cheap HID kit off ebay for like $35 from china

I'm installing a 35w kit from The Retrofit Source tomorrow, in stock 07 projector housings.

Sure retrofitting new projectors would be even better, but I just need a solid improvement w/o alot of work.

I'll let you know how the difference is.

Your early 4runner does not have projectors lamps, correct? Unless you also upgrade to 06onward 4runner housing or a new style projector from TRS, it may not be worth it from what I have read.

Just a few thoughts, I'm new at this HID stuff too.

It's not the best idea to put a HID kit in a reflector based headlight. If you have stock halogen projectors those would help but I'm assuming the OP doesn't since he has an '05.

Which is also illegal but it is the way to go. Nothing is as good as using HID projectors.

few good ideas... I think for now I am going to go the cheap easy route... that said I am picking up a used stock set of lights to hack on... I have tools and I am not afraid to use them... I think I will read up on projectors...

That sounds like the best plan.

Look around on hidplanet.com, you'll see some good ways to do a nice retro. It's not hard at all, just take your time and trim a little at a time. Check their classifieds too, you'll be able to find some good deals on shrouds, projectors, ballasts etc.
