I'm wondering if it makes more sense to wait a couple of years for any kinks to be worked out. I realize the 5th Gen is being built at Tahara, but it seems like there are always problems with new models.

Anyone have any input on this? I'm going to need all of the ammo I can muster to convince my wife that buying the first year of a new model makes sense.

I don't remember any significant teething problems with the 2003 4Runners.

Consumer Reports gave them a much worse the average reliability and it ticked off a few members. There was a recall on something with the fuel system. Consumer Reports gave them better marks later on for the 2003.

To me, the biggest problem was the plastic cladding that they dropped. Since it was only the early 2003's, it sure dates the car, IMHO.

I think alot of people will say steer away from the 1st year of a new model. I feel that way to some degree as well, but have done it a number of times in the past will little issue. Having said that, I really do not want one of the first off the assembly line. I want the workers to get some experience assembling a new model.

One thing I have noticed over the years is that if there are small but pesky issues with a new vehicle it can take until the 3rd year to get it properly addressed. Primarily due to the manufacturer finally admitting to it and then engineering a fix. Big issues usually get addressed fairly quickly.

My '03 Ltd V8 4WD: 1) replaced driver's seat (nasty squeak), 2) futzed around with and eventually replaced moonroof (bad rattle then stopped working), 3) replaced entire X-REAS system (leaking shock; can't just replace one shock with that suspension.)

But it's great now! (135K + miles)

Wait for a second year, if you don't want to take a chance with a first year model. The only thing I recall being an issue for the 4th was as Peter mentioned, a leaky fuel rail on the V6, which was addressed.

I have a first year model of the second gen Tacoma. It's been fine. A friend of mine who's big Toyota fan has had numerous first year Toyotas without any issues. The Previa which had 240k when they traded it, '97 Camry with 170k when it was sold and he's got a tC now. Toyotas historically have proven to be pretty good with first year models.

I had no problems with my '03 Limited 4WD V8 'til last year (5 yrs later) for minor stuff. Moonroof squeak --fixed that by installing nylon caps.
CD's ejecting --fixed that by using a cd cleaner.

You do realize that that they have warrenties to replace that stuff and recall so you get it fixed/replaced for free, just buy one now!

This statement is so true.. i have the first year of the 2nd gen G35 sedan and i've been to the stealership numerous times for warranty issues.. on my 4runner i had never gone to the stealership for anything other than maintenance and its been 3 years now still running like a champ!

On my 2003 V8 Ltd:

- stopped using my cargo area cover because it started rattling (and a replacement would cost $600).

- fan motor for heating/AC system had to be replaced. That was expensive ~$500.

- Occasionally I get a droning noise when driving 60-65 mph at a very steady speed (e.g., cruise control on). It happened early on when I got 4Runner new, then went away after a few hundred miles. It got bad again last year, dealership called Toyota who said it was induction roar (don't think so), and then it mostly went away again.

Other than that it has been mostly regular maintenance in the 85,000 miles I've put on the truck. I'd rate it as very reliable.

I would like one to, but given that we are only at the start of a massive economic depression there is no way in hell I am buying anything. All this talk about an economic recovery is a lie. As for first year models, I would never buy a 1st, second, or third year US car, but with Toyota and Honda they usually have every things good by the second year.
