I drive 80% city (san francisco) the rest on hywy.

I get to offroading 1-2 times a month.

EDIT: Not going to buy procomp tires...they don't make sizes for my rims....????strange.

I personally think that any procomps will handle snow, mud, and rock perfectly fine. My stock tires do!

What do you think about those rims though? Should I be concerned about taking them offroad?

Oh, and should I be concerned about going to a 17'' rim? I've done the math, and if I get the same size tire, I should have enough clearance. But should I get the same size tire, or wider/skinnier?

As far as tire size is concerned I'd probably choose the LT265/70/17's. If you want to go big maybe the LT285/70/17's. I am more up on what fits a 4th gen better than a 3rd gens. I think lots of guys use the 285's. Skim the 3rd gen section here and read some signatures.

Off-roading- Those rims should be just fine for the type of wheeling you're doing. If the stock rims and tires are getting you there and you're not going to hardcore rock-crawl then you'll be fine.

I have Xterrains on my Jeep Wrangler. I have only ever cut one on a rock (my fault not the tire) but they sure did not last long. I have 14k on them and they are just about wore out. I am probably going to get the new BFG mud terrrain km2 next time.

After doing more resarch on the procomp tires, I think I might pass. I do a lot of city/highway driving, but I do love to offroad. I was looking at the 6ply tire from procomp, but I think I might be better off with revos/nittos or some other A/T

I am concerned with how far the wheel will stick out towards the road. I'd obviously prefer that over it facing towards the body. I don't think I'll need spacers though....??

I'd actually be open to spacers if I could run 285's. I really like the look of the wheel sticking out past the body; very aggressive. What do you think?

If it's too big a hassel, I'll stick with 265/70/17

I dont have time to get into rubbing issues.

Those rims will have a very aggressive stance. The stock rims have almost 30mm of offet. The new rims only have a 6mm offset and being 8.5" wide they'll hangout a good bit. Maybe 285's go on a 3rd gen with no rubbing... Search around a bit. Have shop mount a used one and see if it clears...

So, i've been doing my own research to see what's going to fit...

Seem that my "stock" tires are actually bigger than I thought (I bought this truck used)

Stock size should be 265/70/16, My size currently is 275/70R16 114S. This was the info on the rim: j 16x7jj 15

The procomps should be 17'' Rims, with 8.5" Width and 6mm Backspacing.

I'm having trouble finding Procomp tires to fit 285's, so I might go with another brand.

I could use advice on what tires to go with when the time is right.

285/70-17 is the size I think you mean you're looking for. That should be readily available from most brands.

so this is one of the area's that confuses me.

On the same site that said that 285/70/17 would fit on my truck with 17/8.5 rims; they now say that that tire will be too tall for my truck, when trying to purchase a tire....wtf.

It might be a setting on the site, but who knows.

Again, to reiterate; I have no lift. This is a stock truck. Maybe a lift in the far future.

The website shows 285/65/17's as an option which is about a 32". A 275/70/17 will squeeze under a 4th gen. I'd have to assume that'd work for your 3rd gen. 3rd gens seem to have more room than 4ths. (With no lift 265/70/17 is the safe bet.)

I may be wrong but I'd expect a 285/70/17 to be too much for a non-lifted 3rd gen.

bolt pattern?

I have had people tell me two different bolt patterns for 4Runners, 4th gens. Some tell me it is 6x5.5 and others, even yotatech is saying that it is 6x139.7, and another guy on ebay too. I even used a bolt pattern guide online and it said 6x139.7. Which of these two is the correct bolt pattern? Can any one tell me the center bore? I believe it is 106mm, not sure. Also, is the factory wheels lug centric or hub centric?

Hub-centric: Yes.

6x5.5=6x139.7: 139.7mm=5.5inches

IIRC 106mm is the correct centerbore in mm.

Are you sure that 4th gens. are hub centric? I read everywhere on this site that they are LUG centric. I did buy some Mickey Thompson Classic Locks and could not get them properly balanced, even after about 4 trys, one I know used a road force balancer, still the steering wheel shimmied at about 55mph. I gave up and sold them. I am assuming that they were HUB centric and that is why they could not be balanced properly. Can I get some others input on if our 4th gens come with HUB or LUG centric wheels. I bet there is not a lot of after market wheels that are Lug centric. Hmmmm.
