IAC Valve Testing and Cleaning

Hey Dudes,

[MENTION=102606]infamousRNR[/MENTION] and I have another video for you. If you have a 1996-2000 model with the IAC valve attached to the bottom of the throttle body, this video will show you how to test it and clean it.

If you have a 2001 or 2002 model, you have a different throttle body that doesn't have a screw on IAC valve that controls the air flow to the engine when it's idling.

Whats up Timmy! Wasn't sure if you checked your youtube comments on this video still but I saw your back and forth with Jacob about the inner bearings going bad on this if you blast it with cleaner. Do you think its safe to clean with Qtips and cleaner on the end of it?

I regularly check our YouTube comments. I check it much more than I get on this forum.

Yes, you're safe cleaning the IAC with Q-Tips and cleaner.

Had a high idle I was chasing after replacing my 98 Taco engine (uses the same IAC from what I can tell as my 97 T4r) and used this to diagnose if it was working properly. Test came out good and figured out I had to have the AFR sensor plugged in to get a normal idle.

How low is your idle? If it's below 500 rpm. Maybe. These oil pressure lights don't flicker and your oil pressure is way too low.

It’s at 500rpm. I had the sensor replaced and it’s still happening.

You better put a mechanical gauge on it to see what your oil pressure is at. See how it varies. You don't have a Fram oil filters on this engine do you?

When this started on my camry engine. My suction tube was plugged. I cleaned it all out had 60 psi and the engine seized a few weeks later...

500 RPM is very low so it is worth a try. Also check for any vacuum leaks like cracked hoses or ones that might be loose. Most 4Runners will stall out at 400 RPM so yours is just barely above stalling speed which may not be enough for the pump to maintain adequate pressure.

Mine idles at 500 rpm all the time.. My Oil light does not flcker or flash. At idle the v6 will go down to 4 to 8 psi. The light will kick on at mostly 2psi and below.

This is why I suggested a thorough check as to what is going on. Mechanical gauge to verify what the pressure is and its range.

If the engine is hitting 2 psi and the light is illuminating, Something maybe going on as these in the v6 or the i4 are not known for super low oil pressure with the oil light on.

Now if i kick on the ac. My idle runs up to 750 rpm at idle.

So if I have a 2001 that's idling high, does that mean it's something else?

I need the location of the crankshaft position sensor. My black wire with the red strip makes the idle control ground out about 15 times a second. I know this because I used a test light hooked to the positive battery lead and touch it to the black with red strip and it just flickers, the light I mean. Plus when everything is hooked up to run, it will not idle at all but runs rough at 1500 rpm and up. Changed fuel pump and fuel filter. HELP!!!!!! Everything is according to the video posted. It is a 1996 4runner automatic transmission V6 engine. I know it has a cam sensor by the pulley on the cam passenger side, but where is the crankshaft sensor?

The crank position sensor is near the crank pulley on the driver side. You'll have the easiest time getting to it from underneath by getting the front skid plate out of your way.

The test light is too much of a load for signal wire testing. They are great to test for battery voltage.

A high impedance meter is best. Basically a multi meter.
