Icon coilovers?

Thinking about buying the extended travel version. All thats needed for the ext travel is upper control arms correct?

Are there better coilovers for the money? I think wheelers has the icons and camburg upper arms for $1500 shipped.

Is this a pointless upgrade if I do not have money for the rear right now? I have OME 906 springs and OME shocks in the rear now. I'm afraid the rear will still ride pretty hard which I dont mind and with the c/o's the front will be softer, and when I hit a large bump the front will soak it up and the rear will fly off the ground. What do people do to the rear normally when they use coilovers? I do a lot of street driving during the week so keep that in mind.

Can the rest of the suspenion handle a little higher speed beating?

Any input and suggestions appreciated, thanks.

Also, will adjusting them to the full 3 inches have an effect on the ride? Would it be better to set them at 2" and use a 1" spacer?

They're a great product but I think a little over priced. It's just a lot to spend on just the front when all youre running in the back is some 906's. But it all depends on what your goal is with the truck. 3" up front is the same no matter what brand you go with, yes it will start affecting the ride of the vehicle. However, if all you're going to do is raise the front 2" then yes it's pointless to spend that kind of cash for just the front end.

Just my $.02

Respectfully, I do differ and yet agree with my dear friend 05LTD :thumb3:. He's right, combining two different systems may takeaway from the designs and lessen the products intent. Having said that, ICON delivers on both front and rear systems for every budget. Although costly IMO ICON delivers superior performance equally marketed by others with similar claims.

Although we did experiment with Bilsteins in the rear while waiting for the ICON piggybacks to arrive. IMO, the ride did improve; but some would argue its the $$$$ placebo affect. LOL Nonetheless there was a noticeable difference ala .......like-kind system working as intented.

We are very satisified with performance and value of our ICON system. I would further add; that there is noticeable difference off-road, especially over ruts at higher speeds. Having said that, the majority of those riding in the 4Runner are those with us tooling around town. Their comments equally shared by all, some being 4runner owners, is that the ride is smooth and sedan like ride. Sedan like.......I just spent lots of $$$$ to make this an off-road beast, lol WT heck!

We have our ICON set to 2"ish with a raked front and slightly higher in the rear, delivering the ride described above. Recently we decided to take the rake out but have not done it yet. Perhaps during the complete teardown oem engine rebuild that's in progress as we speak. But that's a whole other deal, care to donate..........:D

Best Regards.........8sm

no, there's alot to it to get the complete long travel set up going,it really depends on how far you want to go with this, think of spending somewhere near 4~5k for a complete long travel kit unless you can do a bunch of fab work yourself

not really, kings are way over priced imo, icon and radflo are right there in the ball park; i went with radflo as they were a bit cheaper and was able to talk with the owner and get them custom valved for me; can;t go wrong with either imo

well the way i look at it is, the rear will be no different than it is now, so there's really no loss there;it's really a question on IF you ever will get around to doing the rear at all, i'd say if you go with icon's or radflow all the way around you'll be much better off in the end but also spend alot more $$$ if money is tight i'd just look at getting a complete lift kit from the likes of toytech and calling it a day, that way all 4 corners are good and you're done with it for much much cheaper; but your talking long travel above so i'll assume you want that for some reason, and say go with the icon's and get around to the back once you can, they are rebuildable so you can bring them up to par with the new ones if it takes to long

Can the rest of the suspenion handle a little higher speed beating?
honestly; yes and no; you can if you really want to and i'm sure it'll be fine, the question is how long though and how in control do you want to be? i've only done the fronts with a high end coil over and am running the billie lift shock with some lc's in the rear right now and i can say the back end defiantly cannot keep up with the front and gets kicked/jumped around while the front end is still on the ground pulling the truck around the corner on the washboard logging roads around here.

Any input and suggestions appreciated, thanks.
you're welcome; lol; just my view on it; i plan on doing the back sometime around Christmas with some matching wide body shocks; in the mean time for you i'd suggest trying to find some Lc coils as they ride a bit softer and should get you through for a while till you can get your rear shocks ordered up.

The OP is talking about the extended travel Icons; they make them for an addition 1" or so of travel. He isn't referring to a full-on long travel. They're a 100% bolt-on deal.

Check it out
1996 - 2004 Tacoma / 1996 - 2002 4Runner Ext. Travel Front Coil-over Shock Kit - ICON Vehicle Dynamics

Op: The ext travel ones only need an aftermarket UCA to achieve the "mid travel" that they're designed for, but when doing desert running or high speed stuff, the oil in the shock is what you need to worry about. It heats up from that type of fast paced and long duration use, so that's why they make ones with resevoirs too- to add extra oil so that it doesn't overheat and fade. I'd say as long as you don't get a 2" diameter c/o such as the ones Sway-a-Way makes (they make a 2.5" too) and get a 2.5" c/o, you should be golden.

So to answer your question about the rear too, something with increased oil capacity will help, such as the Bistein 5150 or really Icon's version. Extremely expensive though.

I have Icons extended Fronts and Rear along with their UCAs. The ride is really nice. It seemed when I installed them that I had more lift than my OME Lift, so I added Spidertraxx Wheel spacers and that stabled everything out really nicely.

i my self just like 8sm have the full setup as well. extended travel fronts and external resi rear icons. the has been some coverage regarding this subject and search function is your friend.

to me they coilovers work very well they were worth the price i paid for them about 900 for the coilovers and 700 for the rears. i paid about 400 for the camburg uca's

using the icon coilovers and ome 906's and tokico shocks in the rear i could tell the rear couldnt keep up with the coilovers the rear kind of just bounced around to follow the coilovers. after i recieved my rears the ride changed again for the better and felt well balanced.

do not use the extended travel coilovers without the uca's as if you do you will destroy your factory uca's as they are not designed to handle the extended travel and the angle of the stock uca's

Pricing on these are more than most setups offered. but you will need to keep in mind these are CNCed here in the us of of billet aluminum, rebuildable and serviceable. the cost is well priced for the r&d done on these items.

Yes I was refferering to the bolt on extended travel icons not a full long travel setup.

I think I will just run the front Icons and camburg uca's with the OME rear until christmas. I don't do anything too serious just a little messing around on the weekends.

I'll do a review of everything once it comes in and pictures for sure. I appreciate all the input!
