ICON Delta Joint Users - Chime In Here

Folks, we don't have a good solid thread for reviews on ICON's Delta Joint Tubular/Billet UCA's. I'm looking at buying a set since I need the perks of a traditional ball joint due to the salt we receive in the winter months here in Michigan.:sniper:

I was about to pull the trigger on a set of Camburgs; however, I've read quite a few cases where guys were unable to get their caster in the +4 range with them. I don't want to spend $500 and not get what I'm looking for so, I'll just spring for the ICON's if they truly deliver results.

So what's your guys's take -

  1. How is the build quality?
  2. Do you have any squeaks or rattles?
  3. Any concerns thus far?

I've been running the Icon DJ UCA's for about 6 months now. I put them on right before a trip to Canyonlands and honestly could not be happier. I have them paired with 6112's on 4th clip. I was easily able to get caster above 4 degrees.
I have no squeaks or rattles, build quality seems outstanding, but as you know they do not come cheap. You can probably find some Black Friday deals though.

A couple tips, don't bother with the grease needle fitting on the ball joint, just thread in the Zerk it comes with and use conventional grease gun fitting.

Only use this grease on Bushings,

Yes this means you will have two grease guns to service UCA's, one for bushings, one for ball joint.

I found this out the hard way as the instructions do not specify which grease to use and comes with no grease.
Do not Grease the bushing Zerk fittings with the control arm bolts tight, this will blow out the bushings.

Is there anyone in the Denver area who has upgraded their uniball with Delta joints and would rent me their tools? The price is steep enough that bind the tool on top of the Delta joints would pay for a pair of jba UCAs!

I don't recall using any special tools to install the ICON tubular UCA with the Delta Joint. Watch a few videos on how the stock UCA comes loose with a few taps of a hammer.

I'm happy with the ICON UCA with the Delta Joint. I have no complaints or problems in the 6 months since I installed them.

I think he's just looking to upgrade his ball joint from uni to Delta...which I don't think is an option...?

Either way, I've got about 20K mi on my DJ's and no issues/complaints to report.

Icon sells a kit to remove the old uniballs and install the new delta joints.

I had icon uniball uppers on my fj and used them longer than I should have. They needed a rebuild about 20-30k miles before I finally switched to delta joint arms. No problems in the 6 or so months I had them on before I traded it in. Like stated above, just use the standard grease fittings. I tried the low profile style and never could get them to work. I plan on getting them again when I lift my 4Runner.
 
I am using the Delta UCAs on an ORP w/ KDSS, 3" lift, and 33s on stock Trail wheels. I installed myself and plan to service them after any trips/scheduled maintenance intervals. I'm fortunate the roads here are salted only 1-2x a year. Only have a couple thousand miles on them so far but I'll report back on any issues. Icon has videos on YouTube if you're wondering about their install or maintenance recommendations.

They Icon uniball UCA can be swapped out to a Delta Joint. Icon sells a press tool (~$40) to press in the new Delta joints. I pulled out mine UCA's about 10 months ago and dropped them off at a local shop and they pressed out the old uniball and installed the Delta joint. No more squeaking, no more build-up on the top of the joint. Was able to get to 4° of caster. Cam tabs are maxed out, otherwise probably could have gotten more.

As far as I am concerned, it was a good upgrade.

Hamburgerpimp, just to clarify you mean you need to place the zerk fitting on the top of the Delta Joint (see photo below) and place grease into the delta joint itself?

I don’t think that’s what he meant. The DJ comes with a needle style zerk fitting on the top of the ball joint housing (as well as two “standard” style 90 degree zerk fittings, one on each bushing housing).

What I interpreted it as him recommending was removing the needle style zerk fitting and replacing it with a “standard” fitting. The fitting for the ball joint zerk is a 6mm and can be found at most automotive retail outlets.

I’ve heard a couple people chime in that the DJ comes with the optional standard fittings and all you need to do is make the choice to replace the needle style.

It’s also been noted that if you decide to switch out, the optional “dust cap” won’t fit over the top anymore. Which is probably why they chose to go with a needle zerk fitting to begin with.

Personally I’m replacing the needle fitting with a standard unit as I’m not going to be running the dust cap.

And NO, you don’t need to add any grease to the ball joint as it comes pre-greased from Icon. What I would recommend doing is contacting Icon and see what brand of grease they use. I know it’s a moly blend, but sometimes the grease soap of a particular brand doesn’t mix well with another brand and you’ll have to push all the original grease out during maintenance or you could end up with an oily mess running down your coilovers.

Yes use Li,
Lithium grease on delta joints when that time comes (new are already pregreased as stated by ChrisJHarney) but other than that no issues at all been on for over 12k on my FJ pro suspension.

My bushings swelled up and had to be replaced after 3months due to lubing with Moly grease.

I had to buy new bushings from ICON, they would not warranty them due to using the wrong grease, your call.

Thanks for the reply. Weird that they would tell me otherwise, not sure who to listen to.
 
I guess the guy I talked to had more of a "grease it with whatever you want" attitude, not that he didn't care just that it doesn't matter which grease you use.

I should've searched elsewhere a little more, it looks like silicone PTFE is generally recommended for poly bushings so I'll just bite the bullet and use two grease guns.

I just bought a pneumatic grease gun and put moly in it, even though the PTFE zerks are tougher to get to and make more sense to use with the automatic gun :violin:

Is this common?! Sounds odd. I purchased these but I haven't installed them yet.
