Icon or Radflo

I'll hopefully be picking up my 2014 Trail premium this week with KDSS and wanted to get everyone's input. I've loved the Radflos I've had on my 2000 for years now but without being able to see the valving specs in each of these setups I was wondering which was preferred. I definitely go wheeling from time to time but 95% of the time my 4runner is on pavement and I like a soft ride. Which would you recommend?

To be more specific;
THIS Radflo kit - Radflo 4Runner Stage 2 Suspension Kit w/ LR UCA's

THIS Icon kit - 2010 5th Gen 4Runner Stage 2 Lift w/ Light Racing UCA's

If it were me, which it will be in a few months when I can afford the lift and tires, I would go Icon
 
My guess is that you would like either kit tbh. I just ordered the Icon stage 5 because I wanted remote resi since I wanted max damping and I want them to stay cool. Call MetalTech and ask them their opinion, explaining exactly what you want and why. Wade, Mark and LT are all very knowledgable and won't give you bs.
 
Any resi for Stock or extended travel is compete overkill. With the amount of travel there, we would never need to worry about the shocks overheating even flying through the desert for hours.

Perhaps. I also was attracted to the half inch more suspension travel...and it looks cool! Lol, I'm a firm believer in overbuilding. Makes it more fun for me. :smokin:

If i had the money I would probably blow it too. God knows I've spent money on stuff I didn't need. Completely agree on the looks and bad ass points but the $3k difference is a lot of money to spend.
 
Radflo is designed with 600 lb springs. Metaltech orders theirs with 650 and 650 valving. Icon design is 650. Don't think you can get them with 600s.

Softer spring is generally softer ride. I've called and talked to Radflo, Icon, Fox, King, SAW. Finally settled on Fox and I absolutely love them. They come with 600 lb springs. The ride is superb. Not harsh. Not too soft. I couldn't be happier.
 
I have Icon stage 2 with MT Rear Long Travel suspension and absolutely love it. When I don't drive the truck for couple days and start to drive it feels stiff but the more you drive the softer it gets. The Icon designed to soak up all the bumps offroad and it gets softer so the ride becomes more pleasant.
Buy what you think you will get most used of it. I don't think I saw bad reviews on either Icon or Radflo, you won't go wrong with either one.

I wouldn't call it overbuilding when you can't use it at all, more like a waste.

Agree with both of these. I had the Radflo 2.0 kit from Overland Warehouse when I was close to stock and the ride was perfect. When I added more weight to the truck and the 2.0s weren't enough I went with Icon and the ride is also very good. You won't go wrong with either choice.
 
I've been running the Radflo 2.0 kit for a couple of years now. I don't have any complaints so far(knock on wood…). My front spring rate is the 650 lbs. I am currently redoing my rear suspension with the long travel kit using Radflo 2.5" shock bodies this time around. I will not be going with remote reservoirs as I don't race the truck. The fluids inside will not overheat for what my wheeling style is. I'm just running trails somewhat slowly in the woods with some rock crawling so I don't feel the need to buy the remote reservoirs. Like what was mentioned, I think you'll be happy with either or. Good luck!
 
my main gripe with Icon is their use of digressive valving vs progressive - but thats a preference i suppose
 
:iagree: I'm always learning something new on here! Seems that ICON's digressive valving coupled with KDSS is overkill, but without sways it could improve on-road manners? Something to consider if I ever decide to go full on long travel and ditch the KDSS altogether. While my standpoint on this may be off since I haven't spent much time in 4R's w/o KDSS, I run ICONS w/ KDSS and want to say that it feels like it rides on rails on the highway and around town. And yes, remote res is definitely overbuilding for what most of us do in a 5th gen and this goes along the same lines, but I like that CDCV valves are available as part of the package and as an upgrade. A nice little modular touch worth mentioning.

I'm workin on putting some albums together but here's a couple. I didn't end up getting the CDC, actually ordered the old piggy backs but apparently they were discontinued? and got these instead.


The pic doesn't show the res installed, it ended up on the frame in the pocket just above/behind it much like the stock photo on icons site. Gotta credit Jeff at Wicked Trail Products for the pictures, they're posted on FB somewheres

looks great. nice thing about the remotes is that they can be upgraded with CDC valves when they're rebuilt. :naughty:

you really going to run those neoprene boots in New England? i'd think they'd just make things worse; easier to just routinely get a good spray in there at the self-wash bay. i assume you got the IVD coated fronts?

got any more shots of the whole rig as it sits now?

my apologies to the OP for going a wee bit off-topic... it remains somewhat germane to the subject, however... :violin:

After putting on the icon 2.5s it feels like my skidpad/slalom numbers went up a bit :driving: Im sure they work great off road too :biggrin2:
