I have 1997 4Runner Limited 4x4, 215K mi, no rear locker (all stock). I have chance to put in a mechanic training shop w no labor charges, but parts must come from O'Reilly, not Toyota. I know the supervisor/instructor. Had recent timing belt/water pump replaced and good tires.
Rides rough, squeaks, skips when hitting bumps & crosswinds blow me off the road. Steering wheel vibrates, even though wheels are balanced. It never loses alignment. A delay and clunk when taking off this winter (added trans fluid helped). Doesn't use oil. No extreme off-roading, but like more capability, of course.
Having valve cover gaskets replaced, tuned, drive belts, fluids changed. Wondering what else should be done in a situation like this? Recommendations on suspension items especially appreciated. Some things like repacking axle seals/bearings, won't be done at this shop if friend isn't directly involved. I'll ask if they can add locking rear diff (electric vs. air??) May not be able to have semi-extreme modifications done here and hope I don't have stuff done that would prevent it later, at regular shop. I'd be ok with a small lift, but I don't know what else I'd need to do, to lift >3"
