Title is misleading calling it "ID theft" if it's referring to identity theft, since no personal information is stored on the transponder. Only aspect of it is someone is crossing a toll bridge pretending it's your car on your dime.
They're just cloning the transponder and racking up a bill on your account, similar to how a little over decade ago analog cell phones were being cloned and airtime charges being racked up.
The bright side is if this "freaks out" enough people and they go into paranoia, it'll mean less people at the electronic toll lanes and I can get through the toll plaza even faster. Haha, selfish... I know.

I could not view the video it was "unavailable" -
any way you look at it the ability of the authorities to match up video tape evidence with the toll being collected kind of defeats the purpose. You would not only have to hack their account or transponder device but also obscure or alter your license plates to "get away" with anything. Or always be driving a stolen car....
Maybe this will trip up a few tweakers- but even they have some basic fear of video cameras.
Out here at the airport they discovered they were sharing the frequency of the E-Z Pass with the mechanical arm of the parking lot entry device. Probably just had to tweak it a bit.....
