Idle Speed control valve

I have a '99 V6 just shy of 135k miles on it. It's idle range (from 400-1200) was startling to me. This upon starting the car mind you. However I could usually solve the issue by turning it off and then restarting it with little or no problem. However today upon exiting the 405-N at Fairview where I work, it died on the offramp. I orginally thought that it was out of gas, as I noticed the fuel gauge malfuntioning to a degree before hand. I called AAA, they got me gas, but it didn't resolve the issue. I ended up having to drive with a foot on each pedal to keep it afloat. I'm now having it towed to south coast toyota to have it checked into. They told me that it was the IDLE SPEED CONTROL VALVE. Has anyone else had a problem with this in a 3rd Gen V6? Could it be as simple as cleaning the fuel injectors?

Fuel injectors do not need to be cleaned. Yes it could very well be the idle air control valve when idling

ok well this will make it even better as far as confusing anyone. The tow truck driver actually managed to fix my car by taking a screw driver and lightly tapping a sensor located at the rear of the throttle body. I'm still going to get it fixed, but what the hell is going on? I know a little about cars, but I mostly just hold the flashlight when it comes to knowing what's what and working on them.

i'm not sure if this will resolve the problem but when a MAF sensor is dirty or clogged up, your engine will shut off. What MAF sensor do is, sends information to your computer inside your engine and telling the engine that your getting alot of cold air into your engine. which it will increase your hp. if the sensor does not send any information to the computer, it won't recognize anything which the engine will not turn on. this isn't a common problem but maybe this might help alittle.

I also have a '99 V6 Runner and had a problem with the Idle Speed control valve. I probably had 80 or 90 K on the truck and the idle would be erratic when I stopped at a stop sign or traffic light. It would go up and down, up and down. It was still under warranty so I took it to the stealership and they replaced it. I think the cost of the part was around $135 or so? Good luck.

yeah, the stealership quoted me at $422.14 for the part and replacing it. Obviously with 135k miles it's no longer under waranty. The part I found online from Toyota was $189.95, whereas aftermarket ones I found were about $135. So I'm getting screwed, but I can't fix it myself so I guess that's my fault/loss.

$135 is about right!! I've been telling people with 3rd generation 4Runners that thier idling problems is because of the ICS or IAC valves. These will cause your truck to idle roughly, surge, not hold a cold start fast idle, poor gas mileage, and a really fast idle (engine racing at times)! I have an 1984 GM 4 cycl. and have replaced the IAC valve twice. It needs to be replaced now as a matter of fact........I called local automotive dealers and was quoted a price of $158 while dealer's was $271.

This is a simple replacement repair......usually this valve screws into the side of the carburator or injection system. There is an electrical plug going to the valve so that it may communicate with your ECM.

Your experience with this problem will allow you to assist others who may have the same problem. You can help them save $$$ with a DIY job. Also, you could've went to autozone and leased thier code puller. It would have told you that the IAC vavle was malfunctioning. You could have pulled the code right there in the parking lot.

well I actually did go to autozone and have the code pulled. Interestingly enough it didn't show up! The only thing that showed was PO420 which is for my cats. Not sure if it's the precat or the main cat, but I'll tell you one thing I'm not going to pay $2k for the stealership to replace that one! Toyota only ships 'em as a the whole exhaust system past the exhaust manifold! Aftermarket it shall be, but that's a whole other issue. Maybe my comp. is retarded and didn't pick it up. afterall the only code it displayed was 420...
