Idle Speed - High Rev's?

Does anyone know what is considered normal RPM's on a cold engine start vs. normal operating temperature start? After an "all-nighter" in the garage the engine races up there to about 1600-1700 RPM's and gradually works it's way down as the engine warms up. Even after it's only been sitting a couple of hours it does pretty much the same thing. We're having temperatures here in Kentucky during the day around 75-80 degrees... 50's at night. At normal operating temp it settles down around 650-700 RPM's.

Also after sitting overnight, there seems to be an unusual amount of air noise coming from the engine compartment. It settles down after a minute to a very quiet, smooth running engine. It is the 3.4 V-6 on a '97 Limited. It reminds me of one of my first cars, a '77 Monte Carlo when there wasn't enough coolant in the radiator. I've checked levels in radiator and overflow and levels looks fine. It will do this each time after it's been sitting at least an hour or so.

Anyone experienced the tranny not downshifting in a timely manner? It has good clean, crisp upshifts - but it will hesitate somewhat when downshifting. A couple of times while sitting at a light if felt as if someone bumped me in the rear. As if it wanted to move forward ever so slightly.

The RPM at startup sounds normal. A few hours is enough time for the engine to completely cool so the higher revs are nothing to worry about. I think the air noise you are hearing is the fan. Your engine has a mechanical fan, meaning it is connected to the engine by a pulley, and it has a clutch that takes a minute to warm up before the fan will spin freely and slow down. I'm not sure what the tranny problem is but it may be the engine stumbling because the engine in my dad's old camry stumbles sometimes and it feels like someone has tapped the bumper. That might not be the problem but it's just an idea. Hope some of this stuff helps.

on my 98 v6 runner, after an overnite sit, it would jump to those rpm's you mentioned, but would settle back down to 500-700 rpms at normal idle. after sitting for about 4+ hrs, it would do the same thing. i do know the v6 engine would melt snow off the underside if kept in a garage since the engine retains heat pretty good in a closed space.

it doesnt matter what the temp is outside, -40F or 40F it would still jump up into the 1500+ rpms after an overnite sit, on extreme cold nites it would jump closer to 2k rpms (-40F). but that was rare i let it sit overnite and not have the block heater plugged in to ease the startups.

i do know some engines would high idle at 1200+ rpms others would start at a higher setting.

cant comment on the other issues as i didnt not have those on the 98.

Those 1600 rpm's just seem so high for a cold engine. I can't imagine close to 2,000 rpm's on a real cold morning. Especially getting the cold oil warmed up & circulating. This is my first Toy and I don't recall previous vehicles running this high at cold start.

I guess it's considered okay since there are a lot of Runners out there with 200,000 plus miles on them.
