Idles rough after new head

22RE '86 4runner (non turbo)
Okay well I finished putting on new head, pain in the.... anyways, it runs rough when idle, if i kick it up to 2K RPMs it sounds great.. I guess most cars do...

if im at 12 degrees it runs better at 12 degrees than when its at 5 degrees. What should the degrees BTDC be?

Im also messing with the idle screw with no luck...

plz sum1 help

Edit: Also with the "T" connector shorted, it seems to idle even rougher, it slows down. In the past I dont remember much of a difference in idle speed when timing it with T connector shorted.

Also since we removed the throttle cable, I was thinking that maybe it was too loose, but I think thats not the case, shouldnt it run idle fine when the throttle "butterfly" is fully closed? (or having the cable disconnected?)

Stock timing is 10* BDTC. Advance it to 12* BDTC and gain a little.

As for rough idling, stock idle RPM is 800.

As for the rough part, I'm really not to sure, I would check ALL vacuum lines.

Do u have a 22RE? My stock says 750 idle speed on the sticker under the hood

Whoops. I meant for the 3VZE. Yes, 750 is correct for the 22RE.

what do u mean "gain a little"?

It advances your timing. Without going into detail, it just improves the 3VZE's non-existent performance.

BUT, I misread your post and and realized that you have the 22RE. My bad. On the hood there should be a sticker with the timing on it. Check that and you should be good. Are you sure that you connected everything?


So why did you replace the head?



EDIT: Connect the throttle body! If it is loose and closed, you are letting no air in the engine, which is needed for combustion.

Ya im pretty sure I connected everything, we are double checking everything. My dad was a mechanic in his day and my car is an old car (86) so what the hay....

BTW, blown head gasket is why new head, also, the spark plugs threads wernt great...we re-tapped one of them wrong...we thought why not get a new one...

ya it was kinda funny to confirm it... We took the spark plug out and bumped the starter...WOOSH green liquid shoots all over...
