95 runner sr5 3.0 auto with about 130,xxx on the clock.

Problem. Runs crappy in the rain. Will not go above 1800 rpms. Runs fabulous in dry weather.

Solutions attempted already -- new distr cap, new rotor, plugs and wires changed. Ignitor and coil changed. New air filter, (actually put a 'cold air' intake on it.) filter is dry. Found a few open wires 1 on the distr plug 2 at the coil/ignitor. Fixed all problems found. No open vacuum lines.

Today was the first time it rained since I fixed the newest found broken wire. It held out through about 20 mins of a good heavy rain then it started, and continued for about 45 mins til i got home. I pulled off the side of the road while it was happening and it looked like everything was dry.

This weekend I will be scouring every wire and connection from the fuse box under the dash out to under the hood. I will also re-check all vacuum lines. My question is this

Can anyone give me a few spots to pinpoint to maybe get this issue fixed?

thanks (apologies for the long post but i didnt want to leave anything out)

Check your TPS, the connector on the engine, and the connector to the computer. Road spray under the hood can get into the TPS or the engine block connector and corrupt the signal. Ditto with water coming in behind the dash and trickling into the kick panel.

Your AFM and wiring and the O2 sensors and wiring are also possibilities, but my money is on the TPS or TPS connectors.

Next time it happens check to see if ECM has any error codes.
I think one of the many EFI system sensors is getting wet.
It might set an error code.

common issue for injectors also if you have a bad plug the water will ground out the injector and cause it not to pulse.

okay so i pulled the throttle body and gave it a thorough cleaning, about a 1/4 inch of gunk. I pulled most of the wiring apart that is under the tb and repaired any breaks and re-taped it all. I took off the tps and checked for debris or anything and it looked clean. All back together now. Idle is right at 1000 rpm. I cannot turn the tps down any. Gonna wait for the next rainy day and see what happens.

The other wiring seems to be ok.

I had the exact same problem. Whenever I washed the truck the rpm's would bounce between 1500-1800 and go NO higher then that. And my passenger floor board would be soaked. It ended up being a missing grommet that seals the hole in the inner fender that the antenna wire goes through. Pull your splash shield down and see the grommet is gone.

Yeah, leaks in general. Someone on Yotatech mentioned leak around right side of windshield so water was getting to Circuit Opening relay behind glove box - That's also close to ECU on First-gen. Not sure if that's same location on second gens.

guess i will be looking into that today. I just changed the tps sensor before sandy came through. I noticed i get more rpms with the 'ect' button pushed in but still have same problem. I will look for a missing grommet after I clean out the sunroof drains on my "runs in the rain car"

thanks

i think that leak may be an extremely good possiblity. I just pulled the kick panel and the carpet was damp (hasn't rained in a cpl days). The lower corner of the computer was rusty. Now I gotta find where the antenna came in. It is no longer there to follow the wire (also means this is a great possiblity). Will keep you updated..

thanks
