If you totaled your baby today, what would you buy and why?

My 07 sr5 v6 4x4 is on the chopping block. So far $8500 worth of repairs and still going up. It might be totalled. What to do? Got alot of mods and addons. I was thinking maybe buying it back and fixing it on the side. Maybe getting a v8 if I can find a good one. Maybe go third gen? Maybe tacoma? maybe fj40?

My mind is all over the place. I will update here with what happens and get some pictures of the damage and repairs if they do occur.

After owning both, I'd go for another GX470 in a heartbeat. They only come in one trim level so there is not worring over what it does and doesn't have. They just come loaded with everything. I might even go gx460.

I would probably look for an older Land Cruiser or GX... I just like the older Toyota trucks, but if I wasn't able to find what I wanted and just wanted to buy brand new today, I would probably just buy a Ford Raptor.

Depends on what you plan on doing. What I have been eyeing all for several reasons.

Nissan Leaf-all electric NO maintenance besides tires. The simplicity sounds nice after wrenching on my 4Runner on and off for 5 years. That and you can get a fully loaded 2013 with heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, surround cameras, etc etc. for under 10k.

5th gen 4runner-Don't have the rust issues of the 4th gen, bigger drivers area(beneficial for me since over 6 foot and the space at times can seem tight)

Sequoia-v8 and large 3rd row for growing family

80s Landcruiser-the simplicity of the vehicle with no computers seems appealing to me in that I can actually do basic maint on it myself

Lexus GX460/470-As other posters have said..a v8..optioned out. Can have a 2-3 year old model for the same price as a used 4runner.

Some accident totals, can reap a ROI - with leg work, quality trade connections & good insurance negotiation skills (on value):
My brother has a few friends in the auto body trades, one is an expert frame man, with 30 years experience.
His rust free 2000 Jeep Wrangler (TJ) was totaled when a dump truck failed to yield & went through a stop sign.
- the frame was straightened by the 2 lads, 26 labor hours total & its now laser straight...bumper corner & left frame horn, mangled a foot
- my brother and I sourced all the parts
- one guy bolted on the fenders, bumper & grill parts & repainted front end...all door & hood gaps, ended up perfect...all done in a hobby garage.
- insurance paid out $11,000 cheque...he rejected their first $9K offer and provided much proof of accurate replacement costs
- brother paid for tow, weeks storage & salvage value auction estimate
- after paint, front end alignment went easy...nothing off

^^ My brother paid out $5,500 cash, in all parts & auto body work / plus he pocketed $5,500 profit.
- and all kept off CarFax (as he never gave up his ownership)...another negotiation

I feel like I'm already getting screwed. All I wanted was to get an after market bumper instead of the Toyota one. I went with the recommended Geico shop. Now they have my car. I ordered the bumper but now I have to fight them to pay me for it? I have a wheel and tire and they are charging Geico $500 for it so I should get that at least plus the bumper and the paint and labor to install the bumper. I'll find out tomorrow if it's total or not. I feel like I should have taken the vehicle and gone to a body shop that would work with me not some big factory place that's there to squeeze me. Any help is appreciated. Adjuster is going back tomorrow to look at the damage now that it's broken down.

RULE #1 after an accident - if vehicle will drive, get it home.
RULE #2 - if you need a tow - damaged vehicle gets delivered in your driveway.
^^ This levels the playing field & avoids storage fees
- appraiser works with you, not a shop manager / someone playing games here

GO get your Gen4 out of that shop, and get it in your procession.
- now you can deal with the appraiser...and restart the process

........ I went with the recommended Geico shop. Now they have my car.

^^ Stop making mistakes or listening to bad advise...now have to right some wrongs ASAP.
- or keep getting the run-around...and loose $$

If vehicle too far taken apart now / accompany appraiser at shop...start being assertive !!

Probably the simplest facelifted 5th gen i could find with 4wd. Trail wheels, trd pro take off suspension, trd front skid, and done.

Or a super basic new 2 door wrangler.

If it is driveable, it ain't totaled. and if the damages are not greater than 50%of the accessed value or whatever the insurance goes by, it ain't totaled.

Know what totaled means first. :becky:

You are pretty much going to get back repaired vehical if you cant just get cashed out.

Mine had 8k damaged with no airbags deployed. Not totaled.

I would get a mercedes g500 with bush bars, throw spacers on it and 295-75-16 BFG's. But I don't have that kind of money, so I stick with 4runner for now.

I would probably get an 08+ 4th gen, possibly 5th gen, or crew cab tacoma w/ topper.

I would go buy a complete frame off ground up restoration of an 60-70's model chevy truck with the steel dashboard that never cracks and put the 5.7 drivetrain I had in my 98 chevy Silverado.

that thing got steady 19mpg no matter what and it would fly, wouldn't hesitate to pass anything with it even pulling a boat.

everything today is made complicated as shit, totally crap materials, computer everything and nothing but pollution control everywhere.

just give me a simple basic reliable vehicle that is easy and cheap to work on and reliable, there is nothing made after 1990 that fits that description.

so in short, chevy c10 in 68-72 years body put onto the frame and drivetrain of the 98 chevy Silverado with 5.7 v8 350 and im good. that gives me the old style simplicity and the newer better ride and single fuel injected throttle body and powertrain done the right way :thumb:

Or give up on IFS and go with a 80 series landcruiser.

Been calling the adjuster and the shop over and over and they are telling me that I have to wait until after the second assessment. After that they can decide if total or not. I will probably look for a v8 version if they do total it. The guy is telling me the fram is damaged.
