If you were to buy a sports car

Buy a used vette and throw a racing suspension on it and trailer it to a track on the weekends.

Everyone makes fun of the GM's but it will dust BMW's so painfully around a track.

Yeah but an NSX will dust a Vette on the track. Was just at the track this past weekend and one of my friends with a mostly stock (just suspension and exhaust) NSX took down every car there including Vettes, BMW's and 2 Vipers. Nothing handles in the corners like an NSX.

Is maintenance cost going to be an issue at all? And if he likes the NSX, he should wait for the new one!

Depends on the track and the corvette.

A stiffer racing suspension will address most of the Vette's wallowing, and the puny Honda V6 will get trashed on any straightaways.

Handling will only go so far.

Of the cars you listed... Corvette all day. I had an E46 M3 and hated it. I sold it 6 months after I bought it. I can't speak to the latest generation's power and handling but they're nowhere near as attractive. The Corvette is a brute and I love everything about it. Except the price... GM has lost their damn mind. As soon as my 4Runner is paid off, a Corvette will probably be my next car.

Sorry but your wrong. Most tracks have very few straightaways of any length, mostly corners and that's where the NSX shines. He reeled in and passed every car in the corners and left them in his rear view mirror. Another NSX shattered the record by 8 second at this track earlier this year.

Sorry OP for going off topic, carry on.

There is no substitute.

NSX. Timeless design, Honda reliablity, can be driven daily (I do), low maintenance and will hold it's value like no other car. Mine is worth more now than when I bought it in 2010 and that's after putting 70K miles on it for a total of 130K, although I will never sell it.

Here is a pic of mine.

Beautiful car. Looks like you're in Foothill Ranch? I MTB there all the time.

Howdy guys,
So my dad is in the market for new toy. He ideally wants a V-8 front engine RWD sports car and has kinda narrowed it now to a e90 BMW M3 or a C6 Z06. What would T4R choose?

Oh yah and here is another twist, he is also likes the NSX

?????????????????????????
Out of your choices:
1. NSX
2. BMW M3
3. 2015 Vette
Now if money wasn't an option....
1. Lexus LFA
2. Bugatti Veyron
3. Audi R8
4. Nissan GTR black edition...the list can just keep going.

Damn that's sexy.

I'm telling you, RS7 is the way to go...

It looks aggressive but it's not over the top. It's subtle and kind of understated but a f'n monster. It's Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. It's a high end luxury car, it has the flexibility of a hatchback, and it has the balls of supercar. It's has a 4.0 Liter twin turbo V8 wth a power band you have to experience to be able to comprehend... at 1,000 rpm it's already putting out 295 ft/lbs of tq. Think about that, right off idle, 295 ft/lbs. From 1,750 rpm all the way until 5,500 rpm it puts out a massive 516 ft/lbs of torque, thats an insane power band. Horse power is peaked at 560 from 5,700-6,600 rpm. Audi claims a conservative 3.7 second 0-60 time.

What even more impressive is how it handles mods. A couple weeks ago I got a used RS7 that was traded in (for an R8 V10 Plus) that had an APR ECM flash. With a simple software update it puts out 674 hp and 700 tq on regular 93 octane pump gas. It was literally gut wrenchingly fast. With that much power channelled through the quattro system the acceleration is so brutal it almost nauseating.

Gotta define what "sports car" means to you.

To me, a Z06 is a sports car. So are all of these: 911, Boxster/Cayman, NSX, Audi R8 or TT, BMW Z4, 370Z, probably a bunch of others I can't think of at the moment.

An Audi RS7 is *not* a sports car. It might be brutally fast and luxurious but it's also very heavy and not tossable on twisty roads in the same way the above cars are. This article in the current C&D is worth reading:
Audi RS7 at Lightning Lap 2014 ? Feature ? Car and Driver

A BMW M3 isn't a sports car either but perhaps it falls more into a grey area. It's really a comfortable sedan or coupe that's not too big with a really huge performance envelope. The E90/E92 versions are amazingly well-rounded cars and would be one of the easiest to live with on a daily basis.

To me a sports car does not mean a track car. I'd take a nice fast car over an uncomfortable impractical car that sucks to drive on the street.
