If your third gen was totaled, what would you replace it with?

No, nothing happened, this is just a thought exercise.

Obviously, nobody's making 3rd gen 4runners anymore, so if yours was hit by a trash truck and totaled, what would you replace it with?

I'll put my answer in later after we have a few responses to stir the pot...

I'd go for a 1st gen 4runner, or a land cruiser. I would probably also need a DD in either case though, so I'd have an additional car for that.

I'd buy a Hilux Surf from Japan. In fact, in another couple years when I can get the 1999 version imported I plan on doing just that. 3.0 Turbo Diesel, fully loaded is what I'm going for.

I plan on keeping it until we aren't using internal combustion engines on most road going vehicles.

A lower mileage 3rd gen would be at the top of the list but if my budget is a little bigger in the next year or so I'd look for s slightly used 5th gen Trail.

We're on the one payment plan and have been for a while. So I'd have to see what the payout was. I've had my eye on a 80' FJ40 that has been parked for years in a carport of a house that is no longer being lived in. I'd probably try much harder to talk to the owner who has not responded to the notes I've left. If that didn't pan out I'd probably shoot for a 1st or 3rd gen runner.

Suprised you didn't have Land Cruiser down for an option Martin, I think the LC's are cool as hell(the mid to late 90's gen). I would have probably gotten one of them instead of my runner but they are hard to come by around here, not to mention a bit more money.

That's where I'm at. I got a T4R to get out of payments on my 01 tacome 4dr. If the insurance payed what my runner was worth, I'd get another 3rd gen. If I had no money to put down on another ride and was forced to get a loan, I'd do either the 3rd gen or another 4 dr Tacoma (probably another 01-04).

If it came down to having to replace the 4Runner after a wreck or total loss, we would have to either get a 4th gen or, more likely, another 3rd gen. Of course, this would be after weeping softly for a few days. My wife and I both LOVE our 3rd gen. It's a 2000 SR5 V6 2wd, 190k miles and no show-stopper problems ever. Replaced a MAF and put a used, lower-mileage diff in, as the original diff's pinion bearing was making an awful racket.

I keep thinking I would like a 99 Highlander edition, but those are getting a bit long in the tooth by now. I'd have to get an 02 SR5 with 4wd if I went the 3rd gen route. If we went 4th gen, I'd go 05 or 06 SR5 V6 4wd.
