IFS flex

Is it normal for our 4runners to tripod a lot in the front? I noticed that the flex kind of sucks especially compared to live axle.

Could my springs be too stiff? I'm running the ome heavy springs but I thought I needed to for my front/rear bumper weight.

Here's a flex shot. notice the back flexes fine (solid axle) front is struggling lol.

I don't think IFS droops as much as a solid axle when unloaded, for example. When you rack the truck on a lift, the rear axle droops no
ceably more than the front.

Your comparing apples and oranges. Welcome to IFS! Your coils arent helping the flex but they do help support the weight from the bumper and winch. Softer coils will give you more flex but they wont give you the lift you have with the 886's and bumper.

I would rather have the extra lift than a little more flex. It probably wouldn't be that much more anyways. Mediums are 150 pounds of added weight and heavies are 230

you can remove your sway bar and get more travel or droop on flex's like in your picture. I removed mine and it made a noticable difference in keeping all 4's on the ground.

However, yes it is normal to tripod alot on an IFS rig. with open center diffs its not to much fun as to when you pick a tire up on a climb you get wheel spin then loose all momentum. Lockers will allow you to pick tires up and keep on wheelin so if your finding yourself picking up tires alot on your trail rides consider lockers front and rear. (i plan to add some to my truck) go to ARB's website and watch there info video on there lockers its pretty awesome what they open up these trucks to do.

Now with it being normal to "teeder" its not a bad idea to go back to the rock you were on in that pic and drive up a little more. you'll feel the truck start to pick up the back left tire and you'll slowly rock forward reloading the weight to the front right. have a buddy hold your roof rack or stabilize the vehicle in mid "teeder" you'll find the truck is pretty well balanced when its in this position. Its a good idea to get a good feeling for this "teedering" effect as it can be nerve racking to some on the trail as well. its best to know your tipping angles so if you find yourself a situation that you need to "teeder" through you dont wined up on the side of the truck instead of that front right you were trying to teeder over to load. a good way to practice teetering is to take steep ditches (similar to road side run off ditches) and drive through them at an angle (also a good way to max out flex in the front and rear axles and see what your sitting at)

this was before removing the sway bar with HD OME 3" front and rear lift setup no added weight like required lol

I plan to add lockers as well. I already have the compressor. Just got to find a shop that will do it and not break my bank.

same boat bro, I'm lookin at drive line services they have a shop near by my place, i'll PM you any info i gain from talkin to them.

Looks like my answer. Thanks casper!!!

Just be aware that there's a trade off when taking your sway bar off. Yes, you get more flex off road but you lose handling on road. My buddy took his off his Taco to get more flex and the ride really suffered on road. We went around a corner on an on ramp to get onto the freeway and I thought the truck was going to tip over! :lookout:

Just a heads up...oh, and your rig looks sick!

Thats true if you have stock factory springs its not so bad if your running stiffer spring rate springs..

I wouldnt recommend emergency lane changes anymore (search you tube videos for emergency lane changes-4runners)

Body roll isnt as bad if you just remove the front and you have stiffer coils, like aha said. Extended links in the rear and no sway bar up front is the way to go for more flex.
