"Illegal" Christmas Lights

My BIL is a Sheriff and he said that for you to get pulled over for having Christmas lights would be an absolute low point for an officer. Maybe they were flashing and looked like emergency lights? Either way, had to have been a bad day or something. I feel like I've seen Christmas lights on cars all the time!

Either way...I've got mine wrapped on my roof rack and just need to get an extension cord to plug into the rear converter plug and then I'll let y'all know if I get pulled over...
 
other than the lights just not being legal in general, im thinking it likely had to do with the fact that the lights were on the roof. even if they were flashing (which i doubt) there was no way they are anywhere near as bright as sirens.

IMO, this isnt any different than the underbody glow that fast and the furious made oh so popular. 'public safety'. **rolls eyes**

It’s washington state....enough said.
 
It is the blue bulbs (and maybe the red) that got their attention - although it seems to be in daylight.

It is possible that the PD has had an impersonation problem that had them go a bit overboard.

I got pulled over in 2002 during the DC sniper incidents for having a bluetooth receiver on my dash. Back then, manufacturers used to love to put a big blue LED on both the headset and the receiver.

I didn't get a ticket but got told to either cover the light or move the receiver.
 
Seems like the rules in that state dictate no holiday lights on the roof; makes perfect sense to me. If they were made legal, how would they determine how many lights are "too much"? 1 10ft string? No blue lights? Waste of the cop's time to decipher the minutia, better to just ban them all. There are other ways to show your festivity.
 
Might have been the blue, if any were. I know in my state (SC) blue lights are illegal on every motor vehicle except law enforcement.
Still I see them sometimes though- I think it mainly it is a "we'll pull you over for them if we are looking for a reason".

The actual law is " Only authorized emergency vehicles and private security patrol vehicles regulated by the State Law Enforcement Division are allowed use or display of any blue lights or red lights. This includes light bars and smaller lights such as dash, deck, or visor lights. To "display" means to be seen, whether activated or not "

I guess if you were driving around drunk the faint glow of blurry blue/red in the rear view might distract you creating an unsafe situation… lol

Not the best photo, but I have yet to get pulled over for mine. Even have drove past multiple police officers.

**Out taking allll the Xmas lights off both my 4runners**

Not really but seems a bit excessive considering that Washington drivers (which 99% are not from Washington) are absolute crap. I've lived in a few states and have been to many more and WA has by far the worse drivers. WORSE than Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, and New Jersey even!

Yup. I'm in the same state, and my buddy's wife gets pulled over a few times every year she decks out her Xterra. Me personally, I'm not looking for any extra reason for a cop to come talk to me so I tend to shy away from any holiday lights.
 
Running lights on the wife's truck. Asked a good friend of mine who's a state trooper about this and he laughed it off that the cop has nothing better to do. Maybe if he had someone pulled over for excessive speeding, etc. he would add to it.

It's basically officers discretion.

This will be our 3rd year with lights. No problems yet.

I'm with you on avoiding unwanted attention- I haven't had a ticket in 45 years and well over a million miles of driving.

But I'm "that guy" that actually stops at stop signs, never goes more than 5 over, and I even use that unknown mysterious little stick that runs those blinky things, etc. :ohwell:

Lol, after living there for five years...yes, it is Washington state, a place where cops pull people over for any and all reasons.

I was pulled over who knows how many times, a couple of dozen at least, never given a ticket, always BS about mudflaps, window tint, all of it ultimately legal, never even given a warning.

Have been pulled over only once anywhere else in my entire adult life.
 
Inspired me to put mine up in the rain.
