I've never had a 4runner or a offroader. But would like to get into it I think I like 3rd gen 4runner.but would like suggestions from the experienced people. On which 3rd gen year is the best of this generation .......thanks

My opinion, I prefer ones without the Multimode T case. It's not bad, I just prefer the mechanical transfer case.

But most of us take the bumpers off(or are at least planning to....:/)

Use the buyers guide. Even IF you get one with the mulitmode t-case and ADD, you can do the manual conversion. I did. Everything bolts right up, the worst part is making the ADD diff a "manual" diff, but even that's not hard to do at all.

Multimode is all wheel drive. The differance between all wheel drive and 4 wheel drive is how power is sent to the front and rear axle. 4WD sends half the power to the front and half to the back axle, equal power to front and rear axles. All Wheel Drive (AWD) does not, it allows transfer of power to the axle that has the least traction (this is desirable for on-road driving). Because of this, AWD can be driven on dry pavement while 4WD should not be.

I like the 1999 4runners, the limiteds have multimode and you can select AWD or real 4WD. A lot of the limited have the rear locker too. The 99 limited is the best 4runner you will be able to easly find. It had a lot of nice upgrades like the clock position, the cup holders, the better headlights but is does not have all the computer controled crap that the later 2001 models have. If like computer controled stuff the later models have it.
