I'm done with AT Tires

I went with the Yokoham Geolandar AT4 G018 265/70r17 load range 115t because I only offroad about 5% of the time but I did want something that looked good. Only 8K Km's so far but happy with them so far. Road noise is not bad and handling is good. They are light so they did not impact mileage very much.

I just had to replace my Defenders today on my new to me '19 SR5. One of the old ones had a puncture near the sidewall. There was decent tread left, but nothing near what the new ones have. The wear didn't match up to disclosed vehicle mileage, so I figure the tires were swapped from a different vehicle. I did use one of them to replace the original spare.

Right, if I drove mostly highway miles, I would not get a 4runner.

So what if you have a 4x4 and do not go off road?
in the market for new tires , current set is the bfg k02 and are about finished. I have had no issues with these till the last 5k miles, currently have about 55k miles on them.

4Runner don't need no stinking ATs. This was Ten years ago before I went full send on tires, lift, armor, rear locker, etc..But, the Geolanders that came with it were a surprisingly competent tire in soft sand. When it comes down to it, most of us sacrifice a lot of pavement quality of life for looks and occasionally going off road.
I do off road more than most, but let me tell you from experiencing Mud Tires driven all over the country, looks ain't everything. My ears are still ringing. Certain ATs will get loud as they wear also. This can also be a subjective observation for the individual. Different strokes for all of us. No substitution for an hour commute with street tires. Nice and quiet....

Great question, i’ve wondered that myself. Especially with the LC 250 now that seems to me like a 4runner trim level.

Agreed - I ran with the Falken ATs for 18 months, before giving up on them and shifting to KM3s on my daily driver. Because on those occasions when I do go offroad, I don't like being stuck. And since 3 peak doesn't matter, no reason not to go all the way, right?
I do to. I like my Wildpeaks for their off road performance, but I don't prefer them on the highway. They just don't steer/ride as nice as a road tire for long road trips.

In September I picked up a '19 T4R OR that had a fresh set of KO3's on it. The 800 mile trip from the dealership near Atlanta back to Baltimore convinced me that I didn't need an 'E' load range AT tire on the 'runner. I picked up a set of Nitto Terra Grappler G2 on the cheap and swapped them over in early December. Night and day positive difference for me and the Nittos are better suited for how I will use the 4runner.

this old thread always haunts me. guys with way more experience off road, telling me how good the LTX is...but it hurts to believe it.
very happy with my General Grabber ATs in SL load for trail work in the appalachians, but these Michelins are always in the back of my head.

AT tires you pay a 'cool' tax - in premium prices, vibration, noise and gas money + wet braking is poor. I don't like paying taxes.
defenders are the cost per mile champion
the king of sipes, full depth sipes
the million mile rubber
they aren't for the gram they are for the wallet
people driving with AT tires sound like a swarm of bees driving down the road. now I like honey, but not in my truck

You should have bought a RAV4 or a Highlander, because you are paying taxes with lower fuel economy of a 4Runner that you use mostly on road.
