I'm down to 1-wheel-drive! FML

I was playing out in a pit yesterday and my rear diff refused to lock in. The push button 4x4 and the 4LO manual stick both worked....until I tried making it up a sandy hill (which is normally no problem with the rear locked) and then I heard a nice POP.

Now it's got jack stands under all 4 corners. In 4x4 the front drive shaft turns but neither one of the front CV's. What did I dooooo?

I can still hear the actuator with the push button. I drove it 10mi back home with no grinding so I don't thing I blew the front diff. I'm pulling the CV's out now, get back to this later.

Also, the parts 4Runner I have, I sold the rear axle to him but he says it is 4.30 gears. I thought I had 4.10's, it's the exact same thing. Limited, 3.4, auto, E-locker. He wants the front diff to go with it and will give me his 4.10 diff out of his Taco. Both door jams say A/TM A04A

Thanks for the help.

Prize goes to the first one that can tell me what's different about these two CV's!

Bonus round- how the hell do I get it out?

undo the rest of the outer hub and drive it through just like you would do with changing any other CV, you undo pull the wheel off, pull the rotor and the end cap on the hubs pull off your axle nuts then the bolt in the end, remove the C clip on the spline and you can now either push it back to in or on out and you should be golden... clean it out good in there to make sure any little metal splinters or shavings are out removed and put some new wheel bearing grease back in there and you should be good to throw the new CV in and go...

ok now that i looked at the knuckle i see that yes indeed you did shear the inside spline... FYL lol yeah pull the diff and uh have fun

I'd love to do a locker! But it's a lil expensive right now. I'd really like to just go SFA of course. For now though, who makes some bad ass axles? These are the #5 & #6 broke in less than a year (GSP from Advance Auto). I just been sticking with them since they have a lifetime warranty.

I have yet to brake one from Autozone but their boots tear right away and I just wheel with torn boots for a few months until I decide to replace again.

Ok on the other note about rear diff. your buddy giving you the rear out of his Taco wont do you any good since his is the 8.4 and not the 8" V6 diff that we have. Now if they were both e-lock rear end then it is a straight swap and you are golden. Didnt say if your donor Runner was e-locked or if his Taco was.

you could use a string magnet to try and fish that part of the spline out with...or drill a hole in it and thread with a tap and then thread in a long bolt and pull it that way... i know thats easier said than done being axle shaft grade steal...

I don't have a welder or tap set yet. On my list of $hit to get. I'm pulling the diff now but the drive shaft flange is fighting between the bell housing and input shaft on the P/S rack. Lucky me since I'm just gonna pull that rack out no and throw in this one out of my parts truck. Both the rack and diff were out of the parts truck in under an hour. It's a lot easier w/o engine and trans in the way!

The way I look at it is at least I'm in my garage so it's experience for when $hit hits the fan on the trail.

Damn all this time I thought I had 4.10's. I sold him the E-locker rear out of my black parts truck. And upon finding that it's a 4.30 he wants the front diff to go with it since his Taco is 4.10. Instead of buying it from me he's just gonna give it to me to sell. Anyone need a 4.10 front diff???
