I’m out

Solid swap to the PW! 17MPG in a PW and only 12 in the 4R? I'm a bit confused there, I've never gotten the MPG some guys here claim to get but it isn't that bad and I'm on snow tires and in 4H a lot lately. But, more importantly, I'm going to need an update on that 17MPG average after a few more miles because that is about the only thing holding me back from following you...that and my wife not loving the need for a ladder to get in.

don't forget i had heavy 35" MT's and stock gears on my 4Runner.

My mixed city driving in the PW today netted me 14mpg on winter mix fuel. i suspect that something less aggressive than these shitty duratracs would help out. my Falken MT's were just as loud as these Duratracs.

I don't think the raptor has a front locker. I'm 99% sure they just offer an optional torsen limited slip.

Only ones I know of are the ones I listed zr2, g-wagon, p-wagon, rubi. I might have missed one oddball, but I don't really even consider the g-wagon mainstream.

its a Torsen viscous locker from what i understand, not a limited slip

Lockers are soon to be a thing of the past. I'm not sure how much effort Toyota will put into one. At best there's one more 7-10yr generation of mechanical drive consumer vehicles. Electric drive systems will probably make differentials obsolete entirely. I'd love to have a factory option. But if its not in the parts bin already, I kinda doubt it's coming.

I think also you can get a 2500 hd and add the powerwagon equipment package if you want the nuts and bolts without the luxury items. I think the main reason I didn't / haven't gone full size is that towing isnt as important to me and trails are what I got it for. Size becomes an issue now much less with a monster like a PW. Nice truck though. I've literally almost been killed twice by Chrysler transmissions giving out going down the smokeys hauling horses with my Aunt. Ill never own one myself.

Torsen is not mechanically locked. Very different. It is a limited slip, just a better one. Same as an Eaton TruTrac....

Here is some junk marketing from Ford on it.
TORSEN® Front Differential
• Standard on the SVT Raptor, the TORSEN (torquesensing)
differential uses a parallel helical gear
system to sense torque differences between the
front axles/wheels and provides maximum torque to
the wheel with the most traction
• The differential continuously manages power
delivery between the front axles/wheels helping to
maximize available traction over a wide variety of
surface conditions
• By providing a better balance of power, not only
between the front wheels but between the front and
the electronic locking differential-controlled rear
wheels as well, overall vehicle acceleration, handling
and traction are significantly improved
• Includes aluminum differential cover

I've jumped in to drive trucks out of holes with it.. (inexperienced driver...) It's ok, but nothing like a locker. Foot braking it really helps, but not near the control of a spool/selectable. They are good, just not a locker in my book. A very good limited slip.

Damn *****, who will be here for quick wit? I'm too old to follow insta satisfactiongram, so keep us entertained here from time to time.

PWs are cool. I would not mind owning one.

Anything with factory lockers these days is cool. I think the only ones sold here at the moment are

- Dodge PW
- Jeep JK Rubi
- Chevrolet Colorado ZR2
- GWagon

The fact that they included a winch from the factory in the PW is just super cool. Imagine if Toyota had the passion to do something like that.

Nissan Titan also has a rear locker.

I was probably not clear enough... I meant front and rear lockers. The listed ones are the only ones I know of. Plenty of trucks with rear lockers. Pretty much every mfg has them as an option.

Well shit.
1engineer bought a truck...
ST1FLER Simpleman74 bought a truck ...
marshal buys a truck ...

Add me to the list.
Bought a 4spd manual locomotive to tie me over until 6th lands. Almost as many gears as the 4R!
Would have gone straight to a 6th were it available.
Deal pending on my 35,000-km black baby.
Will be hanging around like a chronic cough.
Nice PW, Marshal.

I think we’ll have a bit longer than 10 years left of mechanical drivetrains and traction aids. They work well and are dependable for the true 4wd vehicle genre; companies aren’t going to abandon them anytime soon.

agreed. with everyone freaking out about where the cobalt, lithium and nickel is going to come from - the battery segment can't grow

Warning... off topic diversion ahead.

I think you misunderstand his point. There is very little need with electric drive... No car company sees any real long term future in making traditional automobiles of any sort right now. The guys at the top of every mfg (domestic, import...) are 100% focused on the future being autonomous self driving emissions free modules. The automobile as we know it is expected to be a thing of the past. The idea of owning a car will most likely not exist. You will just hit a button on your phone and one will show up within minutes.

The good news... the consumer is still demanding performance and enthusiast vehicles. The domestics are still responding with some of the most high performance and capable vehicles ever manufactured. This basically stems back to the car culture in the US where many of the mid to upper management in these companies are hard core enthusiast who grew up in the days before life was on a phone... and it is still obviously very profitable. However, they only see this as a short term way to survive.

The bad news.. it is just a matter of time. There is no long term future in traditional autos. Companies like Toyota will react a little different. Their management is from a much different culture and it makes no business sense to invest in a market that is predicted to shrink dramatically. They don't have near the passion outside of the business case.

The idea of a Dodge PW being sold that gets 14mpg.. with a solid axles, lockers, and a winch... in 10 years from now is pretty absurd. The fact that you can buy it now is really amazing.

Long story short.... get them while you can. Interesting times ahead for the automotive enthusiast. We may have hit the peak or soon will IMHO.

Good points all. And ^^ is pretty much what drove me to get my '18 .... plus outstanding trade value and nearly 10% off msrp. I have little doubt this is my last car.

Im fairly certain its both for the PW, the diff has a locking magnet to make it a true locker. It is a torsion when unlocked compared to a open diff like most other manufacturers (Toyota, Nissan, etc.).

Ford was only for the Raptor in the front diff after a certain year, it is not a locker as you said just a better LSD.

Raptor has an optional front locker as well. Ford has a electronic locking rear differential option on all of its F series models. The Power Wagon also borrows the electronic swaybar disconnect from the Rubicon as well.

ruby red is one of my favorite colors on a truck

i'll just be on ExPo

cummins?

Sierra and Silverado have locking diffs with the max trailering package. The 4Runner is falling behind the times, actually Toyota/LEXUS as a whole are.
