I'm stumped on this one: Metal on metal noise, at low speeds.

I've got a metal on metal scraping noise at low speeds that seemed to rear its head recently. It seems to only be at low speeds, vehicle is accelerating fine, and I had originally thought it was brakes, now I'm beginning to think that it might be the brake shield is possible bent, but then on my way to class this morning, I noticed that it seemed to stay around when I was stopped also, but then less audible when out of gear.

Any ideas anyone?? I just want to figure it out. Doesn't sound like a wheel bearing, and pads and rotors all the way around are new.

Could it be coming from the belt tensioners? Mine made a similar noise when they got dirty and the bearings were on their way out.

Hmm, I'll check that , I do have 152k miles on it. don't think the tensioner has ever been changed. Was the noise from yours like the noise of metal scraping against a curb, or like metal scratching against itself?

Check for a rock in the tire treads, trust me on this one, drove me crazy one time. Otherwise check your CV axles.

You meantioned you just got new pads and rotors? Front or rear? Make sure all the hardware is installed properly and not rubbing the rotor. I had this issue when I did my rear brakes. I flipped them around and the problem was resolved.

Yeah if you just got your brakes done, take the tires off and make sure all the dust shields are bent out away from the rotor. Those suckers bend easily.

I'll check my tires. CV's are brand new. I just got new rear rotors and pads (2-3kmiles ago) the front pads and rotors were replaced by the previous owner,(i've had it for a year, so around 22k miles) I checked the pads and rotors on the front recently. I'll check my tread on my tires for rocks, I just really want to get this resolved. I drive too much to have my vehicle out of commission for any period of time.

then it has nothing to do with the drivetrain.
looks elsewhere. engine accessories or belts, tensioners. something.

I'm crazy confused, the noise has changed, and now its mostly when I hit bumps. Anyone have any way to describe the sound of a failing shock or ball joint?
