Importing from US to Canada.

It is crazy that the Canadian dollar is nearly on par with the American (0.96) and a loaded limited is $10'000 less if I were to buy it in the US.

I have no idea how importing costs add up or if I have to pay twice the taxes or what but it seems like I can save a boat load if I import the truck from the states.

Has anyone ever had any experience with importing from the US to Canada?

Thanks.

I'm doing the same investigation right now. To let you know, I didn't find any American Toyota dealer who will sell me a new 4R. The best offer I got was after 4 months ownership/title in the states, then I could buy. Importers can get around this for you.

After the American cost, local taxes and fees, exchange rates, duty cost (6.1%), inspection fees and a few other minor things, it looks like right now (at a .97 Can. $) things will come out about even. For me, I would really like the JBL stereo in a Trail, but that's not available up here, and it is in the states. I'll be importing likely in the spring. One thing to note though, and it's the biggest factor; a 1 cent change in the dollar ends up being a difference of about $550 at an American cost of $45K.

Just for your info, here are the approximate costs I'm aware of right now (I did aim a little on the high side);
-purchase price i.e. $41,000 (@.97 = $42,268 Can)
-local taxes and fees $2000-3000 (Amer.)
-shipping $500-$1000 (Amer.)
-R.I.V. fee $200
-6.1% duty for non-North American built vehicle (after exchange rate) $3000
-GST $2500
-Canadian and Provincial inspections $400

There are also a few hoops you have to jump through before the process is complete.

I'm looking at using an importer just to steamline the process and make my life easier, and he's got his fee too. I've heard the costs for this can vary from $500 to $2000.

If the 4R was built in North America, it would be totally worth it to import. But like I said, as of right now, it's pretty much a wash either way.

Why the heck can't our dealers just make the same configurations that the US dealers can make.

I would have no problem buying there as I am a dual citizen but it looks like it is only worth it if I really must have the limited without anything but a empty cargo area. I live on the east coast and was just thinking about driving down to NH and driving back with it. The only other inconvenience is having the gauges be in MPH, Fahrenheit and MPG.

I could be wrong, but I think you can switch to Cel. and KPG. it has been a while since I read the manual and I am not sure what it would take to change the spedo. You might be able to find the answers in the complete RM generously provided by Nashman69G

My experience is that the nav unit can be in imperial or metric, but the info panel above is only in imperial(mpg, or distance to empty) on my imported USA 4rnr. Mind you I haven't gone thru the manual so thankfully provided by Nashman. I will have to take a gander.

My numbers came out the same way this guys did. I would have saved maybe a $1000 but then I would have had to drive it back from the US and spend a few days getting it brought up to Canadian standards. Not worth it for me.

Most states won't charge local (state) it if you're exporting, but there's the Catch 22: because Toyota won't let US dealers sell to Canadian buyers - you need a US address.

You can buy a used 2010, however, I've seen a few already on fleabay. The importation process is deliberately bureaucratic, but not at all impossible. My last 911 came from California. As long as you have your papers in order, it's worth the effort. The strangest part of it all is having some high-school kid at Canadian Tire sign off that it meets Transport Canada guidelines.

First step is making sure it's on the eligibility list of allowable vehicles - I think the 2010/11 4Runner is, but the wording is vague and you need to double check.

Start your homework at Transport Can's eligible list here.

Then go here.

As you say, right now it's almost a wash, and you might be better off haggling with dealers across the country, then ship it.

Good luck, however you do it.

2010 TE came across on the boat

In Kingston, Ontario. There were NO 4runners to be had. Especially the TE model. My dealer had to order it for me and well I had to wait 2 1/2 months for it to come in. But it was worth the wait.

I just bought a US 2010 BP Limited in the US and will be importing to Canada. It is a used nav cargo deck Limited 4wd with 6k. Toyota doesn't allow new sales to Canadians for export, though there are ways around that, finding a low mile mint one saves a few bucks.

The cost of the truck is 40,200 CDN (purchase price, exchange rate and 6.1% duty). New in Canada they are MSRP 52K pretax. The Canadian Limited only comes with third row seats and has running boards included. We did not want the third row. It was bought in a State with no "out of State" sales tax. Riv fee is 200 plus in BC a small Provincial inspection fee and we will fly and drive making a vacation out of it. The 12% HST will apply, but it would apply on the new Canadian one, as well. Since used 4runners and even new ones are scarce around here, the savings is roughly 12 grand CDN over new, but they do not directly compare. If you compensate for no third row, no running boards and slightly used, call it 8-9 grand saved or created.

New MSRP plus taxes in Canada $57,484.00 CDN (WHITE)

US slightly used imported total taxes in $45,000 CDN (not including shipping or fly n drive)

To purchase in the US, it is best NOT to buy at a Toyota dealer as they pad the price with their certified Toyota warranty which is not valid in Canada for a US import. Very low mile minty US 4runners are tough to find at a reasonable price. The closer to the border you are the higher the price... as Canadians are competing for these and pushing up prices.
