Improved 5mpg on BFG K02

I had been struggling with 17mpg for months on my newly installed KO2s. After reading a few threads, I thought I would post findings to save anyone any doubt.

I took pressure from 37 psi to 50 psi and I am now getting 20+ mpg. I even hit 23 mpg on freeway but that isn't an apples to apples comparison.

YMMV but definitely try increasing air pressure to improve mileage. Please be cautious and know if new air pressure is appropriate for your task at hand (towing etc)

Keep an eye on your tire wear. 50 psi might be pushing it..

That's all well and good, but you're being a bit vague about this.

Was 17 mpg your city mpg or your overall mpg? For the record, 17-18mpg is perfectly normal for city driving (assuming mostly stock vehicle with stock tire size).

What size and weight BFG tire did you change to?

37 psi and 50 psi is a huge difference. The tire's recommended pressure will vary based on its size and construction, but generally speaking you should run your tires at that specification for better road handling and mpg.

so you save a couple buck on fill up but have to spend $800 next year for new tires and $150 to have your fillings in your teeth replaced..... MMMKAY

50psi on E-Rated BFG KO2

I simply e-mailed BFGoodrich to inquire about what pressure I should run these tires on my 4Runner. Attached is the reponse I got stating specifically 50psi.

I'm assuming you're talking about a 265/70r17? If would be stoked to average 17-18mpg with 285's. I actually only got 17.5-18.5mpg even with the stock tires pre-lift.

BFG AT KO2's ~ LT265/70R17/C 112 S show the following:
Max Load, Single (lb @ PSI) = 2470@50

I run mine at 44 currently, which would equate to 2173lbs...... am I underinflated?

I'm running my LT265/70/17's at 40psi currently,
maybe I'll bump it up to 50. My compressor is going to hate me when it's time to air back up though.

For LT tires its a different pressure, 50 psi sounds about right because maximum is 80 psi in those tires.

Chalk them. I highly doubt if you chalk them at 50 psi you'll see a good wear pattern.

LT275/70R17/E 121 R
Max Load, Single (lb @ PSI) = 3195@80

3195 ÷ 80 = 39.94

If you are running 32lbs of pressure.....
39.94 x 32 = 1278 lbs per tire (load)

If this is what you are running, my opinion is yes, you are wayyyy underinflated!

I have C rated 265/70/17 and have them inflated to 38 PSI and just did a rotation. Everything looks good and the ride feels pretty good. Sounds like I should be riding closer to 44PSI to match stock load range of the LE though...hmm..I may bump it up and see how it feels.

This is why load range E tires are terrible on a 4Runner. You have to run them way under inflated to keep the ride close to normal.

And there is no way you just picked up 5mpg, give it a few tanks for your numbers to average out.

Additionally I doubt you're really getting 5mpg total (is this game calculated or from the optimism meter?) more importantly your contact patch now it's significantly smaller which means far less grip, increased stopping distance, reduced control/handling, and increased tire wear as the centers will wear out quicker.

I Have 265 Load C's at 40PSI and average 16.5MPG city with a lead foot. Highway MPG is roughly 19-20MPG, again, with a lead foot.
