Improving My XM

My 2006 Sport was one of the first ones out. It has a button that says"AM/SAT". The owners manual said contact your dealer about XM but at that time the dealers didn't have a clue. I had professionally installed, a Delphi SkyFi2 which transmits through an "unused" FM frequency. I tried pluging into the I Pod jack in the glove box but that sounded awful. My problem is, I no sooner find an "unused" frequency than a week later the FCC grants some preacher a license on that frequency without checking with me first. There is also the problem that an "unused" frequency in one town may not be in a neighboring town and the procedure for switching frequencies is not sufficienty simple that one wants to attempt it at 70 MPH on the interstate. What's my cheapest solution. Can the SkyFi2 plug direcctly into my existing head. Has Toyota since come out with a behind the dash XM tuner compatible with my 2006 radio and I need to junk the SkyFi. Suggestions are welcome.

What you are referring to is an FM Modulator... and you don't always have to use an "unused" station. You can override stations that are being used, its just generally harder to do so. The unit you have has a wireless FM Modulator built in... without buying an expensive AUX input interface for your 4runner, the cheapest solution is to get a wired FM Modulator. This will allow you to override any station you choose and they run about $25 + installation.

I'm surprised that the aux jack sounded awful. This is supposed to have the best quality. If you are getting noise through it you will just need a ground loop isolator. Also there are kits that plug into the back of the radio that will run about 260-400 depending where you look but is controlled through the radio. actually if you just wanted XM you could more than likely do the terk XMDIRECT for Toyota... its $100.

Other than a wired fm mod, thats your next cheapest solution. If the terk isn't compatible with your radio then you'll have to get a piece made by VAIS tech and then you're easily in the $300 range
