In a quandary... tire rub issues

So first I’ll set the scene. 2016 Trail with OME lift, SPC UCAs, 255/80R17 Toyo Open Country tires, Trail Wheels, Spidertrax 1.25” spacers, SDHQ BMC kit. Whew that’s a lot of abbreviations.
Everything was going along pretty good until vanity got the better of me and I decided to put the spacers on. It looks way better with them but rarely rubbed before them.
After I did the BMC, the fender liner mod, and some reshaping of the fender liner I thought I was in the clear, but no such luck. Of course the easy answer is to pull the spacers, and many will suggest to buy wheels with better offset.
Keeping in mind I like the 255s, most aftermarket wheels are pretty wide for them, what offset would I be looking for in a 17x8 that would still look good but have less issues? Doesn’t hurt that I actually like the trail wheels, they are a great design. Most aftermarket wheels don’t have as good as support around the bead and protection of the stem.

Some pics for good measure.

Other possible solutions that come to mind, more lift and bump stops, more modifications to fenders/liners.

Any suggestions welcome. I have done the research and done the mods that I thought would get me there. What’s the next step.

Have you tried adjusting (maxing out the caster) using your eccentrics on your lower control arms? Your spc uca’s add caster with the adjustable ball joint but that added caster does move the wheel “back” in the wheel well a tad. Maxing out your caster via the lower control arms may bring your wheel forward enough to fix the rub. I’m going to have to do this to my rig soon and especially if I go 285’s.

I have 8.5” wide wheels with -10 offset with 265/70 wildpeaks now and barely rub the mudflaps in reverse full lock. Also had to trim plastic up front.

I haven't tried that yet. Mine didn't rub at all on the daily drive and even on some lighter wheeling. But when I got it into full stuff situations it rubbed pretty bad, as seen by the lack of paint on the fender flare. I'll have to go back and trim some of the liner because I'm pretty sure it won't go back even with heat.

Having similar dilemma.. Not sure what UCAs are best for my build to avoid rubbing issues. Running 285/70/17 on ICONs 17x8.5 with 0 offset and 4.75 backspacing. Was interested in JBAs but am afraid they will rub..

As best I can figure, a 17x8 with 0 offset would be about the best option to keep some of the look of spacer vs no-spacer. It would move the wheel/tire inboard about 10mm, but I wonder if that is enough.

if you havent i would def max out your caster... it should buy you some noticeable room

Well I took it to my local alignment shop and they “respectfully declined” to work on it. It was at 3.1 & 2.6 caster. How much distance would I gain with that extra 1-1.5 degrees of caster?

Take it to Sonoran Steel and they should be able to help out. Or just shoot them an email. They are in Tempe. Downtown Gilbert to Downtown Tempe is 14 miles and 26 min according to google.

i cant say exactly... but more.

pending how much your rubbing it could buy you just enough.

Im at 4.9 to get you an idea... you still have 1.8 to 2.3 degrees to go.

The "problem" isn't your spacers - that would happen if you ran any aftermarket wheel with a larger offset than the stock trail wheels. You basically went from a +15 (Stock Trail Wheel) to a -10 offset which a ton of folks run successfully, myself included, with 285/75r17's.

If you already have SPC uppers, go get an alignment and have them max the caster out. I was able to get 3.8 on the driver and 4.0 on the passenger with SPC's. If that doesn't do it, I'd probably go down the path of getting a more aggressive plate for your BMC from Metal Tech and re-doing it.

I agree with others on the alignment being the issue. I have a set of custom 1" spacers, OEM Trail wheels, and an inch taller, slightly wider, tire (285/75/17) and don't rub at the same spot your having problems. With SPC UCA's you should be able to get a really good alignment that's also pretty far forward into the wheel well.

I didn't think my set up was way off base or anything. I went through the math and it looked like it should be something that is workable. I was actually surprised when it did rub again. It doesn't rub on the daily grind, only when wheeling.

I run spacers because the wheels are dangerously close to the suspension without them.

I have the lift safely maxed out and an aggressive body chop.

I only get rubbing at full lock with my Destination MTs and a little bit of rub isn't the end of the world as long as it isn't chunking out the tires.
