in dash dvd/navigation

I just bought a 2011 4runner sr5. Navigation/dvd was not an option, so now I am looking for possible aftermarket options. Main thing I want is a dvd player and possibly screens in the headrest. Want this for the kids to use for movies and video games when traveling. May end up getting the ones that strap onto the seats, but would like to know what others have added aftermarket, and how they like them,

okay i just bought the same truck yesterday. i went to the parts department and they said they can install the 10.2 inch dvd player or two in the headrest with two wireless headphones, two game controllers with 25 preinstalled games in them for $1699.00. they order the parts from another company.

For the main headunit I recommend anything from Pioneer. I have the pioneer avic z120bt, awesome awesome hu, it has an incredible navi system and dvd player. Any of the Avics are really good.

I have a Kenwood DNX-5120. It has bluetooth for my iphone, dvd player, and built in Garmin Navigation. I love mine. Never had any problems and can update the gps whenever i want like a typical GPS. You can also hook up traffic.

you know the thing that got me all worried about getting equipment from anywhere else is when they were talking about having it done by outside people possibly messing up the wiring, etc.
The parts department showed me the dvd/nav they can install, also gave me the option to have the headrest changed to get dvd in there. but i didnt like the fact that i have cloth seats and they would have to make the seatrest leather. or the 10.2 inch on the top.
i know i can find these same items other places but scared to get it messed up installed and warranties get canceled.

I researched this situation a month ago. I LOVE Alpine and was highly disappointed with a lot of negative reviews for their Nav units.

Just bought a Pioneer AVIC 920BT 2 weeks ago for my 4th gen. Its Nav/iPod/DVD/BT/Pandora/DivX/Sat Radio/etc. 6.1" screen. Can work with steering wheel controls and can run other screens (like in the head rest). $999.

Now they have a bigger Pioneer $1499 (ouch) that does all the stuff mine does but it has a 7" screen, and dual zones (Some Kenwoods have this too!) Dual zone is nice if you want the kids to be able to watch something while you do something entirely different in the front of the vehicle (iPod/Nav/etc) But this can also be done with my 920BT by simply having a totally separate system for the rear.

Both Kenwood and Pioneer have a $100 rebate right now....based on the GPS units. I did not entertain any other company's Nav units.

Just look into them more. Go to a few stereo shops (at least two so you don't get wooed by one shop owner/well informed employee) That way you can decide if you want OEM or aftermarket.

I like this idea....unless you have kids that can't watch the same thing.....then two in the head rests seems better.....after you cover them in matching cloth....I agree that leather would be weird

I can see what you are worried about in terms of a stereo shop doing the work but there's not a lot of wiring going on. They use a jumper harness to connect to your original plugs that at now attached to your OEM head unit. You buy a jumper harness that plugs into the car's plugs (no cutting) and then they connect the jumper harness to the new aftermarket wiring harness. Its pretty clean and worry free. Plan on $75-100 in addition stuff like the mounting kit and jumper harness.

Do you have your steering wheel controls working? if yes, then how did you get 'em to work?

CAFROG, did you hook up the pink wire (Car Speed Signal Input)? If so, where did you connect it to capture the speed? I've got an '06 Limited, and will be installing my AVIC X920BT this weekend.

I had the Pioneer AVIC N1 in my old Lincoln LS, loved it. Wasn't a big fan of the flip out design, but the whole system itself was pretty easy to use IMO.
