In-Dash Nav unit with Satellite suggestion

Hi all - this is my first post here. Let me start by saying I'm not mechanically inclined

I have a 2003 4-runner LTD with the JBL stereo system. I couldn't find one with Nav when I bought it new, but now I'm really missing an integrated system - Just bought a 2008 F450 and the system in my Ford has me spoiled, and would like something similar in my Toyota - especially since the Toyota is my every-day truck.

I would love to get suggestions for a system that is reasonably priced ($1000 or under) that has navigation and built-in xm radio - I'm sick and tire of a ton of wires all over my dash with all of my portable units. I'll need to have it professionally installed, so suggestions there would be helpful as well - I'm in Maryland, near Frederick.

One thing that your Ford will have you spoiled with that you cannot get with aftermarket units is voice activation. That is an OEM integrated feature, so the ability to say "A/C on" or "Fan Speed 2" or "FM Preset 3" cannot be added as an aftermarket feature.

That being said, Navi has me spoiled too..

I'd recommend you run a search. I'm not sure what is available out there for less than $1000. Are you looking to spend $1000 including installation?

you may want to look into a pioneer D2 the unit itself is usually $999 and has some cool features for the price..

Do you know if the D2 will work with my 2003's JBL System? I've read somewhere about noise with the factory amp - is there any way around that and still get good sound? Will this unit fit in my 2003 without major modification and will it work with an adapter to my existing steering wheel controls?

Sorry for all the questions, but this is all new to me, and I don't feel like paying an additional $18,000+ to get a new 4-runner just so I can get Nav and integrated XM.

Yes you can. Pioneer offers add on pieces to their N-series and standard on the Z-series. You can't control the temperature and what not, but you can control navigation, audio/video, etc...

For a grand no, but neither is what comes factory. If you took that option out of factory I guarentee you save nearly $3000.

The pioneer voice commands part number is CD-VC1.

oh, ok. I didn't know companies offered that now.

But, it would probably cost just as much aftermarket as OEM. $3k is a high estimate. It's $2k from Honda and I believe about $1300 from Toyota.

I know that the Alpine system is about $1800, without a monitor.

So the aftermarket prices are comparable to OEM.

I'm talking 3K for all the voice stuff OEM....

And aftermarket prices are no where near comparable to OEM... aftermarket offer many more possibilities... audio/video input/output for example... The basic D3 pioneer for a grand is twice as good as any factory setup you'll get.

The same goes for overhead DVD, which is why you'll find a lot of dealers not ordering their cars with overhead monitors and just sending them to the local shop and having it done. My shop does every tv for the local Toyota, Chrysler/Jeep/Dodge, and a lot for Honda and GM. Its cheaper, our products offer better warranty, the screen is much bigger, and it becomes our warranty not theirs.

Aftermarket is much better for the person looking to expand the use of a stereo, but for someone who wants just navigation, am/fm/cd... then factory gets the job done.
