In-line resonator or tip???

What is better? Welding in a resonator behind the muffler, or using a resonator tip? Also, what brand and what size would be good for either of these? I am thinking of getting a Borla muffler, and want to install the resonator at the same time so i dont have to pay the muffler shop twice if i decide to weld one in later.

is the goal for the additional resonator to quiet down your exhaust system? the resonator is pretty much another muffler/silencer and will quiet it down.

Not knowing what you have doesn't help.
Not knowing what you need doesn't help.
Not knowing what you want doesn't help.

Dous had cut his exhaust off after the cat and it was not terrible loud.
He had put on some aftermarket name brand muffler and it almost sounded stock.
He took that off and put a Cheery bomb on it (just a resonator) and it made his 4runner sound like it has a pair.

IMO, I believe that adding a resonator behind the muffler is a waste of money.

If you are looking to quiet the exhaust down you have a few choices.
a) a bigger muffler
b) add a resonator
c) add a glasspack muffler

A resonator is a perforated tube inside a larger tube, no packing.
A glasspack is virtually the same except it has glass packed between the two tubes.

A glasspack will silence more noise than a resonator. True, I have done it!

So i guess ill have to install my muffler first and then decide which resonator or glasspack to get based on how much i need to silence it. I was just hoping to save some money at the muffler shopping by cutting down the drone of the borla before even experiencing it.

as far as I know, I am the only one on here with a Tundra resonator directly 1" behind the muffler. my mechanic installed it, part was free after I complained about flowmasters terrible drone. the improvement was impressive. my exhaust still sounds great (loud) but the drone is 90% reduced. I get have been complimented on the exhaust several times and you can find videos with sound in my build thread.

it may not be easy to find the part, most yards probably throw them away. mine was freebecause the guy I go to builds tacomas and tundras for the desert scene here in SoCal - he had several Tundra resonators lying around. Just make sure it is from a V8 Tundra so that itis high airflow.

I'm on vacation so I can't upload a pic but I did post one a while back on Rc4r's build thread. they are all the same size if it is from a V8 Tundra.

Think you could check and see if your shop has any more laying around next time you go by there? I'd be willing to pay for it, if its not too much. I looked under my truck and it doesn't look like there is much space for anything longer than the Tundra resonator. Plus I would like to stick with something tried and true if I can. Again, we'll see how much the drone bugs me, but I have a feeling I will want the resonator.

sorry but your request is logistically impossible. I suggest you call around at junk yards. most probably just throw the resonators away; I am sure someone will gladly sell one for $20. you might also try adding a glass pack.

found it. thanks. i might just get this, Amazon.com: Vibrant 1790 Bottle Style Resonator: Automotive , so that i dont need to look around for the tundra resonator. not sure yet. well see how much the drone bothers me first and how much i want to silence it.

Did you ever end up getting your exhaust put on, and did you use the Vibrant resonator? I came across your post while doing research for my own exhaust, and I'm trying to get some feedback before I go ahead and make a purchase... I'm trying to avoid too much drone.

Thanks!

Just bring a hacksaw to the junkyard and cut one off a V8 tundra.

I bet they will only charge $10.

Used / new makes no difference, it is a simple albiet hard to come by part.

Yeah, I saw that idea, but that would involve me acquiring a hacksaw first, and locating a junkyard, and the right year Tundra, etc...

I was thinking if I could just order a brand new one from Amazon that did the same thing, it would be easy. I was hoping that someone had already ordered one and installed it, so I could get some feedback. :/
