Inconsistent knock when making turns

I recently replaced my front tire rods, control arms, and CVs over the past year.

However shorty after I replaced the control arms I know have this inconsistent audible clunk. I don't feel it in the steering wheel but when I turn or hit a bump at an angle it makes the sound. I had my control arms replaced again under warranty which resolved it initially but came back within a month to the same degree.

Not sure exactly what it is possibly bushings? if so anyone have a link for parts?

I think I am having the exact same problem. I replaced my worn out lower control arms and now once in a while I get a clunk typically while making a tight parking lot turn.

Hey guys. I have a similar issue. I'd like to gather some information here from you guys so I can help diagnose and maybe find a solution. Here's my questions for yal:

1. What work was done to the lower control arms? Were they completely replaced, or just the bushings and bolts?

2. Were OEM Toyota parts used, or an aftermarket brand?

3. Was the work done by yourself or a mechanic?

To answer my own questions, for anyone else researching this issue:

1. Seized cam bolts, bolts had to be cut with a zip cut to remove LCAs. Installed new bushings, installed new cam bolts.

2. Used both Moog and OEM bolts, still clunking.

3. Work was done by myself.

What I think is happening, is one or more of the bushings is loose inside of the LCA, causing axial travel and creating the clunk noise we feel. You can also feel a slight shift or bind in the steering in certain circumstances. There are several complaints from other Moog users about this same problem.

Subscribed.

I have had a similar problem for about a year since replacing LCAs. It has been infrequently making a clunk with tight parking lot turns. I recently failed state inspection for steering rack, so I'm thinking that might have been the cause all along. I also have some suspect CVs that might be the cause. It's not too much of an issue for me, at 214k miles things are just not as tight as they used to be and I've come to accept that.

Here are answers to your questions:

1. Completely replaced LCA assembly, cam bolts, UCA ball joints & UCA bushings (Light Racing UCAs). 2 out of 4 cam bolts were seized and had to be cut/torched out to remove.

2. All Toyota OEM for LCA. UCA was all Light Racing parts (ball joints & spec-ride bushings).

3. Mechanic.

LCA were completely replaced.

Aftermarket brand, I cannot recall which brand it was

Mechanic, who is a buddy of mine

Did your problem get solved or is it still ongoing?

Full replacement. New cam bolts as well.

brand new NOT reman OE Toyota units ordered from Toyota.

3. Was the work done by yourself or a mechanic? Cam bolt replacement done by Toyota, lower control arm done by my brother who is a BMW mechanic.

I might as well jump in here too.
I get the clunk sound when I back out of my driveway with my steering wheel turned and when my front suspension conpresses as my wheels contact the street.
I did a suspension overhaul all at one time, so I'm not sure what is causing the clunk.
-replaced UCAs w/ eBay balljoint
-changed out LCA camber bolts with new OEM
-rebuilt LCA bushings with ES
-Moog FJ springs w/ 5100s all around

To attempt to fix the issue I:
-added a sway bar relocate/spacer
-inspected and greased front sway bar bushings
-tightened all camber bolts
-bent in the corners of my stock skid plate, I thought it might of been contacting the sway bar

I still have the clunk every now and then :(

I was getting a similar clunk, it ended up being a sway bar bushing

lol, gotta love the generic sway bar bushing response every time someone mentions a front end clunk.

I think what dkyleb and me are alluding to is that we are experiencing a clunk somehow related to LCA replacement. I don't run a front sway bar, but I appreciate the input.

Yup, no sway bar here either.

I know it's my LCAs. I've seen them clunk on the alignment rack. There is axial play from either the bushing or the bolt. I've replaced the bolt, so it must be the bushing. Or it could be the LCA itself. But a few people here have done a full LCA replacement and still experience the clunk.

I went to Firestone for a wheel alignment and they said the knocking sound is most likely from the hub bolts being work from being worn out after 230k.
Not sure if I should go ahead and replace this.

What in order is cheapest intervention to most expensive? I guess i should just go down the list.

Doubt that. Mine clunks when I don't have the brakes engaged on low speed bumpy turns. The pads rattle around and sometimes slide a bit as I engage the brake.

Only other thing is to get down there with a crescent wrench and tighten the LCA bolts as tight as you can.

I did a full OE LCA replacement and still have the clunk. I'm having my steering intermediate shaft replaced next week to see if that's the issue.

Might want to check your brake caliper on the side that's rattling. I had the same issue and found that the drivers side brake pads which rattled when I hit a bump were due to three of the four brake caliper pistons being seized... Replaced the caliper and was good to go.

Worth checking... just in case.

I know someone else on here had a similar issue and it turned out to be the bolts holding in the power steering rack were loose. I've been meaning to check mine as I have the same issue (stock everything minus billys up front.. Had the knock before those)

I am replacing my bushing and also the brake pads. Found the caliper needed to be replaced so I replaced that as well.
Hopefully it fixes the problem.
Keep you updated in results

I just replaced my inner and outer tie rods and the sway bar bushings and I am still getting the knock when I go over any kind of bump. I notice it big time going over a railroad crossing, it is like the steering wheel rattles and I am moving sideways. I can't seem to find replaceable bushings for the rack and pinion for mine. Anyone else replaced steering rack and pinion bushings on an 05 4Runner and have some part numbers
